Today, we honor Juneteenth—a celebration of freedom, resilience, community strength, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

While we commemorate a defining moment in our nation's history, we also recognize that the effects of historic inequities—including redlining, housing discrimination, and barriers to economic opportunity—continue to impact many Brooklyn communities today.

At Access Justice Brooklyn, we believe that everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of income. Through free legal services, community education, and the dedication of our volunteers, we work alongside our neighbors to protect homes, strengthen financial security, and help build pathways to opportunity.

This Juneteenth, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing equity, expanding access to justice, and investing in the community strength that fuels collective progress across Brooklyn.

Because when communities have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive, we move closer to a future where freedom, stability, and justice are within reach for all.

Freedom is strengthened when justice is accessible to all.

Team AJB showed up strong at the TD Five Boro Bike Tour—and their impact goes far beyond the miles ridden.

With deep gratitude to our exclusive sponsor, Gibson Dunn, whose generous support helped make this effort possible, Team AJB was able to rally their networks, raise critical funds, and help shine a spotlight on the urgent need to close the justice gap for Brooklyn communities. Their dedication is a powerful reminder of what community-driven action can achieve.

In support of Access Justice Brooklyn, Team AJB’s efforts mean that more Brooklynites will have access to essential legal services when facing foreclosure, overwhelming debt, and threats to their economic stability. That’s real, tangible impact.

Access Justice Brooklyn is incredibly proud to celebrate Peter White as he steps into his new role as Director of New York City’s first-ever Office of Deed Theft Prevention.

We are deeply grateful to Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani for establishing this critical office and bringing long-overdue attention to deed theft—an issue that has devastated too many communities, particularly communities of color and older homeowners. As the Mayor said, “The theft of a home is the theft of a family’s future,” and this new office marks a meaningful step toward protecting generational wealth and preventing displacement across our city.

During his time with AJB, Peter has been a tireless advocate for homeowners, working on the front lines to combat foreclosure and deed theft while safeguarding the stability of Brooklyn families. Reflecting on his new role, Peter shared that he is “deeply humbled” and looks forward to “protecting working-class homeowners across the city.

AJB’s President and CEO Lilia Toson also expressed the following: “Peter White is a brilliant lawyer and advocate whose combined skill, expertise, and deeply rooted respect for and dedication to his community uniquely defines him as a leader. We take great pride in knowing that Peter will now have the opportunity to bring his talents beyond Brooklyn, serving communities across all five boroughs of New York City.”

While we will greatly miss him, we are excited to see Peter bring his passion and experience to this important citywide effort.

Join us in congratulating Peter on this well-deserved next chapter.

Beyond casework, you’ll help train, mentor, and support volunteer attorneys, interns, and law students. Additionally, you'll serve as a go-to resource on consumer law and Chapter 7 bankruptcy, strengthening our team’s expertise across the board.

This role offers the chance to lead trainings, contribute to broader advocacy efforts, and represent our organization in coalitions and task forces working to advance consumer protections.

We’re looking for someone who brings curiosity, adaptability, and a genuine interest in growing within the role while driving impact.
