If you were suddenly unable to speak for yourself, would the people closest to you know what you wanted?

The person you've known for years. The person you call when something goes wrong. The person who knows your wishes better than almost anyone.

But here's the part many people don't think about:

Knowing you isn't the same as having the legal authority to act for you.

In an emergency, assumptions and good intentions may not be enough.

Who would know your wishes?
Who would know where your important documents are?
Who would know what decisions you're comfortable with?
And who, if anyone, would have the legal authority to help?

These aren't conversations we like to have because they make us think about uncomfortable possibilities.

But having the conversation before there's a crisis can make a difficult situation much clearer.
