realtor.com just came out with its national housing trend updates.

Here are some of the highlights:

- Increasing mortgage rates have not deterred buyers, with homes moving at a comparable pace as last year at this time.

- Record-high home equity for long-time homeowners is providing the means to make moves in a higher-rate environment.

- The number of homes for sale rose 5.8 percent compared to a year ago.

- Active listings topped 1.17 million, the highest level since 2019.

Could robots, dirt, and straw help solve the housing crisis?

I recently read about Terran Robotics, a company in Bloomington, IN, using robots to automate the centuries’ old Adobe building technique. Adobe homes are said to be quieter, fireproof, mold-resistant, and have about 80% less embodied carbon than regular homes.

Using AI-powered robots, the company hopes to close the housing gap caused by labor shortages, higher material costs, and slow construction.

Would this method work in Montana? Probably not. Cold winters, heavy snow, and strict insulation codes mean heavy timber, natural stone, and insulated strawbale homes suit our climate better.

Fall is a great time to tidy up our gardens by clearing out old plants and trimming trees and shrubs.

Before you get started, there are a few plants you might want to leave alone.

Avoid pruning Black-Eyed Susans, Sunflowers, ornamental grasses, and other “seedy”plants, since they feed birds during fall and winter.

Hydrangeas will also bloom more vigorously next spring if you wait until late winter to prune them.

And Mums survive Montana winters more easily if you leave their foliage on for extra insulation.

The Bozeman Cancer Support Community and Downtown Bozeman are turning our town pink in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

As a breast cancer survivor, along with many others in Bozeman, I encourage everyone—women and men—to keep up with annual screenings and tell your doctor immediately if you notice any breast changes.

The American Cancer Society estimates that over 950 women in Montana will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Across the country, about 2,650 men are diagnosed each year as well.

October became National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 to help raise awareness and support research.
