In 2018, The Gordon School in East Providence, RI notified alumni that an independent investigation found credible reports of sexual abuse by a former math teacher against multiple female students in the 1970s.

The allegations resurfaced when a former student came forward in 2017. The school retained independent counsel to investigate, and detectives interviewed at least ten former students. The former teacher has denied the allegations and was never criminally charged.

Rhode Island's revival window, open through June 30, 2028, may give survivors of institutional sexual abuse a chance to pursue civil claims that were previously time barred by the statute of limitations. It doesn't matter how old you are now or how long ago the abuse occurred. If you or someone you love was sexually abused as a child in Rhode Island, you may have legal options.

Father William O'Connell was accused of sexually abusing at least 23 boys between 1950 and 1985 while assigned to parishes across Rhode Island. According to the RI Attorney General's 2026 report on the Diocese of Providence, O'Connell was "one of the worst serial child abusers in Rhode Island history." (p. 282)

O'Connell is one of 72 clergy members named in the report. Rhode Island's revival window may give survivors of institutional sexual abuse a chance to pursue civil claims that had previously expired under the statute of limitations — but the window won't stay open forever.

As kids head back to school this month, it's worth taking a few minutes to revisit the basics of abuse prevention.

Sexual abuse in schools can happen at the hands of teachers, coaches, administrators, or other staff who have unsupervised access to children. Schools that don't properly screen, train, or supervise staff put children at greater risk.

Swipe through for simple, real ways to talk to your kids about body safety, what to ask your school, and what to do if something doesn't feel right.

If you suspect your child was sexually abused, or if a school knew or should have known about a risk and failed to act, our team is here to listen and help you understand your options. Herman Law exclusively represents survivors of institutional sexual abuse. Contact us today for a free, confidential consultation.

A Lewis County, New York jury has unanimously awarded a plaintiff represented by Herman Law $3.5 million, finding Harrisville Central School District and Harrisville Elementary School negligent for failing to protect him from sexual abuse by his third-grade teacher.

This case was filed under New York's Child Victims Act, which allowed our client to pursue a civil claim decades after the abuse occurred. He had reported the abuse to his parents, who reported it to the school. The school failed to investigate the allegations or take any corrective action, and the abuse continued.

Lead Trial Attorney Craig Bernhardt and Lead Attorney Daniel Hunter fought for our client every step of the way, securing justice for a survivor who waited decades to be heard.

Rhode Island's Attorney General found that two priests assigned to St. Aloysius Home, a Smithfield orphanage that closed in 1994, are alleged to have sexually abused, or attempted to abuse, 15 children. Neither was ever criminally charged.

Rhode Island's new revival window now allows survivors of childhood sexual abuse to bring civil claims once barred by the statute of limitations, including claims against institutions accused of enabling or covering up abuse.

If you or someone you love was sexually abused by a priest or staff member connected to St. Aloysius, or any other institution, you may have legal options.
