When pollution reaches your property, how do you figure out where it came from?

Environmental contamination can travel through groundwater, surface water, drinking water, or the air. By the time it is discovered, the original release may have happened miles away or years earlier.

In our latest blog, HGD Partner Chris Hood explains how attorneys and environmental experts work to trace contamination back to its potential source. That investigation can include scientific testing, environmental records, air quality data, satellite imagery, weather information, photographs, and other evidence.

As Chris explains, these cases can feel a lot like detective work. The goal is to follow the evidence and determine what was released, how it traveled, and who may ultimately be responsible.

On Friday, we raised a glass to celebrate Mary passing the bar!

We were happy to share this special milestone with Mary’s family, friends, and her HGD coworkers. Passing the bar takes tremendous hard work and dedication, and it was wonderful to celebrate this achievement alongside the people who have supported her throughout the journey.

Congratulations, Mary! We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see what’s next!

Fried chicken lovers, this one’s for you 🍗

Did you know that in Gainesville, Georgia, fried chicken must be eaten with your hands? In 1961, the city adopted an ordinance as part of a marketing campaign to promote its nickname, the “Poultry Capital of the World.” The ordinance calls fried chicken a “delicacy” and bans eating it with a knife and fork 😄

The rule is technically still on the books, but it’s never been seriously enforced. So next time you’re in town, leave the silverware on the table and enjoy it the Southern way 🙌 We can’t think of a tastier law to follow ⚖️

Environmental cases can require some serious detective work. 🔎💧

In this clip, HGD Partner Chris Hood explains how attorneys investigate the path waterborne contamination takes to reach a home or property. That can mean examining groundwater, surface water, wells, utility water, and even places where contaminants may remain for years, like the bottom of a water heater.

The goal is to follow the evidence back to the source and determine who may be responsible.

🏛️ Proud of our attorney Anabel Braziel!

Anabel and her Colonial Dames chapter, the Henry Soane Chapter, recently helped mark the Old Morgan County Courthouse in Somerville. Built in 1837, it is the oldest standing county courthouse in Alabama. After nearly two centuries, this landmark has been saved thanks to the hard work of a dedicated community.

"I am so grateful to be part of preserving this important piece of Alabama history for generations to come!" – Anabel Braziel

The celebration brought together Somerville Mayor Darren Tucker, Sheriff Ron Puckett, Senator Arthur Orr, Representative Parker Moore, Hartselle Mayor Missy Evans, and members of the Henry Soane Chapter.

Our founding partner Steve Heninger has traded the courtroom for the classroom, at least one class at a time.

Steve now teaches Persuasive Trial Techniques at Cumberland School of Law. That means 15 students, 40 minutes of lecture, and then everybody gets up on their feet. In one recent class, a student examined a witness entirely in French. She does not speak French. When she switched back to English, she was a different lawyer.

"Once confidence shows up to support logic and emotion, magic happens."

What a great evening of advocacy, learning, and community.

We recently brought together law students, HGD attorneys, and staff for the final round of our Closing Argument Competition, followed by an awards reception celebrating everyone’s hard work.

Congratulations to our top three:

1st — Daniel Washington
2nd — Layton Spates
3rd — Nick Thoma

We’re proud of every student who competed and grateful to our attorneys and staff who helped make the evening a success. It was a great opportunity to support the next generation of trial lawyers and celebrate the legal community we’re fortunate to be part of.

When investigating environmental contamination, attorneys sometimes have to think like detectives. 🔎

In this clip, HGD Partner Chris Hood breaks down one of the central questions in these cases: How did the contaminant travel from its source to someone’s home or property?

Working alongside skilled experts, attorneys may examine groundwater, surface water, wells, utility water, and even unexpected sources of evidence to trace contamination back to where it originated.
