Last Friday, the BBA had the honor of hosting 400+ of our members during our Annual Picnic.

Thank you for letting us celebrate you making it half way through the year! We as an organization have accomplished so much in the last six months and we happy to see our members thrive so far in 2026.

Please join us on June 30 for the BBA's CLE program: "History of Birmingham Lawyers: Women Trailblazers." President Rebecca Beers has put together an amazing panel of women lawyers who truly were and continue to be some of our most distinguished jurists, including the Honorable Sharon Lovelace Blackburn, the Honorable Elisabeth French, the Honorable Caryl Privett, the Honorable Carole Smitherman, and former BBA President Maibeth Porter. This lively and informative panel discussion will be moderated by former BBA President Leila Watson. Be sure to register early!

Please note that this event is ONLY for ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE BIRMINGHAM BAR ASSOCIATION. Please be patient upon arrival as we register our members this year - Registration is required for us to maintain attendance numbers.

Please join us next Wednesday for an informative CLE program with new Language Access Program Coordinator, Melissa Fridlin Murrell, focusing on working with foreign language interpreters in Alabama courts. The CLE will cover the State’s new plan to improve the court interpreter program, best practices when scheduling and working with interpreters, and practical strategies to support clear communication. We will also review the ethical responsibilities judges and attorneys must uphold to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and fairness when working with individuals with Limited English Proficiency.

Join the Criminal Justice Section of the BBA for an engaging CLE: The Mental Health Dilemma: Procedure and Ethics in Alabama Criminal Courts

Speaker: Jacob Dubin, Assistant Attorney General with the Alabama Department of Mental Health

Mr. Dubin with provide an overview of the intersection between mental health law and multiple facets of the justice system. The presentation will include a procedural roadmap for cases involving competency issues and pleas of not guilty by reason of insanity. Finally, attendees will gain insight on how to navigate the ethical issues that frequently arise when the mental health of the defendant is at issue.
