After-school time moves fast, and staying prepared can make a big difference in keeping students safe. Our team at Latham Law Group Birmingham MI put together a few simple reminders families can review together as the school year gets underway.

• Set a consistent check-in routine so your child contacts you when they arrive home. Tools like family locator apps or a GPS tracker can offer peace of mind during their route.

• If your child spends time at home alone, go over expectations about locking doors, who is allowed to visit, and what to do if someone unexpected comes to the house.

• Talk through online safety and remind them not to share personal information like their name, address, or school with anyone online.

• Make sure they understand what to do in an emergency, including where to shelter during severe weather, where to meet outside during a fire, and who they should call for immediate help.

Back-to-school season is a great time to help kids build safe habits for the year ahead. Our team at Latham Law Group put together a few reminders we often share with families in Metro Detroit:

• Make sure children know their full name, your phone number, your home address, and how to reach a trusted adult. Keeping a small laminated safety card in their backpack can also be helpful.

• Reinforce good hand-washing and remind kids not to share food or drinks. These routines go a long way in keeping classrooms healthy.

• Check that backpacks aren’t overloaded. A pack should be no more than 15% of a child’s body weight, and both straps should be used to reduce strain.

• Have open conversations about bullying—what it looks like, how to report it, and who their trusted adult is at school if they ever feel unsafe.

• Avoid putting a child’s first name on the outside of backpacks or lunch boxes. Using initials or placing names on the inside is a safer option.
