Not every dangerous pedestrian crossing happens at an intersection.

In 2023, 74% of pedestrian fatalities in the United States occurred at locations other than intersections, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Another 17% occurred at intersections, while 9% happened at other types of locations.

These numbers highlight that fatal pedestrian crashes can happen in a variety of roadway environments, including areas where people may not expect the same level of risk.

Strong Santa Ana winds fueled multiple wildfires across Southern California, forcing evacuations and leaving tens of thousands of residents without electricity.

The largest blaze, the Norte Fire, broke out around 11:30 a.m. Friday near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente before spreading into neighboring San Juan Capistrano.

By Saturday morning, the fire had burned approximately 570 acres. At least six homes had been damaged or destroyed, two firefighters had been hospitalized, and evacuation orders affected roughly 16,000 residents and 6,000 homes. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

In Malibu, the Bryson Fire burned approximately 147 acres. Evacuation orders and warnings were issued as firefighters worked to contain the flames. In Azusa, crews also responded to the Peak Fire, where forward progress had stopped.

The fires erupted during a significant Santa Ana wind event that brought Red Flag Warnings to parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, and surrounding areas. Forecasts called for powerful wind gusts, low humidity, and high temperatures.

The weather conditions also prompted Southern California Edison to implement public safety power shutoffs. At the height of the outages, more than 100,000 Edison customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties were affected, with some neighborhoods losing traffic signals and streetlights.

As firefighters continued working across the region, officials monitored the fires amid ongoing wind and fire-weather concerns.

California’s recent storms left more than flooded streets behind. They also raised concerns about a hidden danger inside some electric vehicles.

The Los Angeles Times detailed how flooding linked to Tropical Storm Rachel exposed vehicles in Newport Beach’s Balboa Peninsula to standing water, raising concerns that saltwater could corrode EV batteries.

The concern comes as California prepares for an exceptionally wet El Niño winter, with many forecasts pointing to the potential for record-breaking conditions and more coastal flooding.

Unlike conventional gas-powered vehicles, electric and hybrid vehicles contain large lithium-ion battery packs that can become unstable when damaged or exposed to floodwater. The resulting fires can spread quickly and be difficult to extinguish.

And the risk may not appear immediately. Battery fires can occur days or even weeks after saltwater exposure.

The problem has surfaced in other states, too. After Hurricane Ian struck Florida in 2022, 36 electric vehicles caught fire because of water damage, according to researchers at Idaho National Laboratory working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some fires reportedly began while damaged vehicles were being transported on flatbed trucks.

Experts say saltwater is particularly concerning because its conductivity can contribute to short circuits and battery corrosion. The issue can affect both electric and hybrid vehicles, regardless of brand.

With more coastal flooding possible this winter, officials are paying increased attention to the fire risks associated with flood-damaged vehicles and other lithium-ion battery-powered devices.

California law recognizes two separate DUI offenses: driving with a BAC of 0.08% or higher and driving while impaired by alcohol, regardless of the specific BAC reading. That means a driver may still face a DUI charge at 0.06%, 0.05%, or lower if their ability to drive is impaired.

For drivers under 21, California also has a zero-tolerance law that generally prohibits driving with a BAC of 0.01% or higher.

This is especially worth remembering as Halloween parties and holiday celebrations fill the calendar. Alcohol can affect judgment, coordination, and reaction time before someone reaches the legal limit.

And if an impaired driver causes a crash, evidence of impairment may also be relevant when determining negligence and liability in a personal injury claim.

The safest plan? Arrange a designated driver, rideshare, or other sober ride before the festivities begin. Don't let one night of fun turn into a frightening situation.

100,000 speeding violations in nine days. That's what speed cameras recorded during preliminary testing along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The violations were recorded between September 16 and September 24 at four camera locations: Tuna Canyon, Latigo Canyon, Decker Canyon, and the Zuma Beach area. About 86% of the violations occurred in eastern Malibu, according to city officials.

Malibu's Speed Safety System uses lidar technology and camera equipment to detect vehicles traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit. The system captures an image of a vehicle's rear license plate, which can then be used to generate a citation for review.

The cameras have not started issuing official tickets yet. The program is scheduled to undergo a 60-day warning period beginning in November before citations are issued. Once enforcement begins, fines are expected to range from $50 to $500, depending on how fast a driver was traveling.

The 21-mile stretch of PCH has been the site of more than 60 deaths since 2010. In 2023 alone, the highway recorded 220 reported crashes, resulting in 93 injuries and seven deaths, according to city officials.

The testing numbers also come with an important detail: parts of PCH remain a construction zone following the Palisades fire, with a temporary speed limit of 25 mph in one section. Officials say that lowered limit affected the results.

Malibu's program is part of a broader expansion of automated speed enforcement in Southern California. Los Angeles is expected to introduce 125 speed cameras, while Long Beach has begun operating its own network.

California has the highest number of pedestrian deaths in the country. And the numbers are difficult to ignore.

A May 2026 analysis reported that California averages nearly 1,200 pedestrian fatalities each year, with Los Angeles County accounting for a disproportionate share of the state's deadly pedestrian crashes. The analysis also found California's pedestrian fatality rate was 3.05 deaths per 100,000 residents.

According to California's Office of Traffic Safety, 1,106 pedestrians were killed in collisions with vehicles in 2023. While that was an 8.8% decrease from 2022, it was still a staggering 56% increase compared with 2014.

Pedestrians are especially vulnerable on the road because, unlike people inside vehicles, they don't have seat belts, airbags, or a vehicle frame to help protect them during a collision.

Speeding, distracted driving, dangerous intersections, and poor visibility can all contribute to pedestrian safety risks. California's Office of Traffic Safety emphasizes that drivers and pedestrians share responsibility for safer roadways.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month. A reminder of how important it is for everyone sharing the road to stay aware of one another.

Every day, pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, and other road users navigate the same streets. A moment of distraction, a missed crosswalk, or a failure to yield can have serious consequences.

Pedestrian safety isn't just about one person. It depends on everyone paying attention and giving each other the space and time needed to get where they're going safely.

A medical transport helicopter crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Catalina Island, leaving three people deceased and two hospitalized.

The helicopter, operated by REACH Air Medical Services, had just taken off from Pebbly Beach heliport on Catalina Island and was headed toward the mainland when it went down shortly after 7:40 p.m.

Five people were aboard the aircraft, including a patient being transported to the mainland for additional medical care.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a marine rescue call at 7:43 p.m. Crews from the Coast Guard, Los Angeles County firefighters, and other agencies searched the area through the night.

Two people were rescued and taken to hospitals in stable condition. The pilot, nurse, and patient were among those who passed away, according to officials.

Flight-tracking data showed the helicopter reached about 175 feet above sea level roughly eight seconds after takeoff before rapidly descending.

The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC135 P2, is now submerged in about 240 feet of water.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the incident.
