Your future self would appreciate a backup plan: and preferably not a family group-chat debate.

An estate plan isn’t only about what happens after you’re gone. It should also protect you if illness, injury, or an unexpected event makes it difficult to make decisions for yourself.

By naming trusted people through a financial Power of Attorney and a healthcare Power of Attorney, you can help ensure that bills, accounts, property, and medical decisions are handled by someone you choose: not left to confusion, delays, or a court process.

Think of it as choosing your decision-makers before life chooses for you. (Much better than drawing names from a hat!)

The right documents, prepared thoughtfully and explained clearly, can give your loved ones direction and give you greater peace of mind.

People come to estate planning with more than documents.

They bring worry, family history, a parent’s decline, a second marriage, a child who needs extra protection, and/or a business they built from nothing.

If I move too quickly, I miss the real reason they are there. I ask questions before I offer answers because I want to understand what protection means in that family. For one person, it may mean avoiding court, for another, it may mean protecting a child, and for another, it may mean making sure a spouse is not overwhelmed.

The law gives us tools, but listening tells us which tools actually fit. When the plan reflects the person, the family, and the season of life, it becomes guidance your people can use when they need it, rather than just paperwork.

Nobody wants their family to become experts in probate court during an already difficult time: not even Milo, our goldendoodle paperwork supervisor. 🐾

A thoughtful estate plan can help make things simpler. A will explains your wishes, while a properly prepared and funded trust may help your loved ones avoid a lengthy court process. Powers of attorney can also help someone you trust step in if you become unable to manage financial or medical decisions.

The goal isn’t just to distribute assets. It’s to reduce confusion, prevent family conflict, and give the people you love a clearer path forward.

Whether you’re in Northwest Arkansas, across Arkansas, or North Texas, a little planning now can save your family a lot of stress later. Milo gives this plan two paws up. 🐶

Families often wait to talk about legal planning until a loved one is already struggling.

I understand why. The conversation feels emotional, and nobody wants to make a parent feel cornered or diminished.

But timing matters. The earlier a family talks, the more choices may still be available. Consider the following:
- Who should make medical decisions?
- Who should handle finances?
- Where are important documents located?
- What care preferences should be known?
- Whether long-term care planning should begin.

When dementia or cognitive decline progresses, decision-making can become more complicated. The law may require capacity to sign certain documents, and waiting too long can limit options.

This protects their voice while they can still share it clearly. A calm conversation now can prevent a crisis conversation later.

Your family’s legacy is more than a stack of legal documents, and the best stories rarely fit neatly in a binder.

A Legacy Interview gives your loved ones a chance to capture the stories, values, traditions, and memories that make your family special. Paired with practical planning such as wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, it helps preserve both what you own and what matters most.

Because one day, your family may treasure your stories just as much as your signatures. (And no, the family photo album doesn’t have to be perfectly organized first!)

Long-term care costs can make anyone’s stomach do a backflip: but planning ahead can bring real peace of mind.

A Medicaid Asset Protection Trust (MAPT) may help protect your home and certain savings from the cost of future long-term care. The key is creating and funding the plan well before care is needed. Medicaid has detailed eligibility, transfer, and look-back rules, so a trust is helpful planning: not a last-minute magic wand (we’re still waiting for those!).

The right approach depends on your health, assets, family situation, and whether you live in Northwest Arkansas or North Texas. Thoughtful elder law planning can help you preserve more of what you’ve worked for while making your wishes clear to the people you love.

August is Make-A-Will Month. But, getting a will is not the same as getting your family protected.

Most people don't find that out until it's too late. This week's article is about the difference, and what real planning actually looks like. Read it here: https://na2.hubs.ly/H078YVw0

Probate can add time, expense, and stress during an already difficult season. A properly prepared and funded Revocable Living Trust may help your family avoid probate for trust-owned assets, maintain privacy, and keep your plan organized if incapacity occurs.

It’s not just about avoiding court: it’s about making things easier for the people you love. And while a Revocable Living Trust is primarily a probate-avoidance and incapacity-planning tool, it’s still important to understand the bigger picture. Beginning in 2026, the federal estate tax exemption is $15 million per person: or $30 million per married couple: and is indexed for inflation.

Whether you’re in Northwest Arkansas or North Texas, personalized guidance can help you determine whether a trust fits your goals and how it should work with your will, powers of attorney, and other documents.

Estate planning doesn't have to feel like a monumental chore: in fact, getting your ducks (or your very opinionated goldendoodles) in a row brings the best kind of weekend peace of mind! 🐾

Whether you're enjoying the afternoon sunshine in Northwest Arkansas or taking a drive down in North Texas, taking care of your will, trust, and powers of attorney keeps your family out of court and your wishes front and center. Even Milo agrees that proactive planning is the ultimate act of care for the people you love.

For 2026, remember that the federal estate tax exemption is $15 million per person ($30 million per married couple), indexed for inflation. But beyond the numbers, it's all about clarity, protecting your loved ones, and avoiding unnecessary hassles.
