It is not easy to bring up estate planning with your aging parents. However, it is one of the most important conversations you can have to make sure their wishes are protected after their passing.

Swipe for simple, compassionate ways to start the discussion before a crisis forces it.

Feel free to give us a call if you have questions about estate planning for yourself or a loved one. We are here to guide you through this process.

Surprising referral - client called yesterday and said she was referred by my 5th grade teacher! I haven't seen her since 5th grade, but the client said when they were searching for an attorney and my name popped up, my former teacher recommended me.

Anyone who is a member of VSECU (Vermont State Employees Credit Union, for the traditionalists), you should have received a notice about the change in the member agreement to: 1. Waive the right to participate in a class action against the VSECU, and 2. require Binding Arbitration (effectively giving up the right to sue in court).
If you do NOT agree to these changes you MUST send a notice by 10/5/2023.
For those of you who do not agree and want to send the notice, here is a form I drafted that you can use.

Rejection of Binding Arbitration Agreement
and Class Action Waiver

I, ________________________[Member Name as listed on Acount], a VSECU member with account number __________________,
Hereby REJECT the Arbitration Agreement, and the Class Action Waiver.

Just ran across this wonderful quote from Dickens "Little Dorritt": “We lawyers are always curious, always inquisitive, always picking up odds and ends for our patchwork minds, since there is no knowing when and where they may fit into some corner.”

I can identify with that, as I love to talk with my clients about their families, lives, jobs, experiences. I guess that is one reason our Initial Consultations take 1 1/2 hrs. .

It will be strange beginning the new year without Judy, my secretary of 40+ years, who has decided to retire.
At the same time, it is the beginning of an exciting new chapter at the office: training a new part-time admin assistant, moving to new and more automated systems to better serve and communicate with clients. Lots of new challenges and new things to learn, but looking forward to it !

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! I hope it will be happy, healthy and prosperous for all.

My office will be closed for Holiday Vacation from December 15, 2022 until January 3, 2023 .
I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season.

With my secretary gone, I've been realizing how much time all the 'value-added' things we do for clients actually takes. What things? Well, filing original Wills with the Probate Court for safe-keeping; sending copies of Advance Healthcare Directives to the primary care doctor and the Vt. Advance Directive Registry; making copies of HIPAA Releases for everyone named on the form; doing the tax form and seeing deeds are recorded. All things that I feel are important, but may not get done if we just tell the client to do it. Time consuming, yes, but important enough to do anyway, so be assured, we'll keep doing it as part of our service.

This is a really interesting story, and great idea for interacting with loved ones with dementia.

People with dementia often lose their ability to communicate verbally with loved ones. But a new study shows how that gap can be bridged with a new music intervention. Music memories remain in the brain after patients lose language. A live ensemble played music from a patient’s youth. This created...

I think this presents a really interesting issue. Especially since there is so much push on Reproductive Rights here in Vermont at the moment. There doesn't seem to be any discussion of a residency requirement for those types of services. Why should End of Life care be different?

For those who are terminally ill, according to Bluestein, moving to another state is an enormous — and potentially impossible — undertaking.

After a great (but too short) summer vacation, with both sons and their families here at least part of the time, returned to problems at work. Seems my long-time secretary Judy will be out for a while. So, now trying do the normal catch-up after vacation, as well as cover what I've relied on her to do. I feel like the proverbial 'one armed paper hanger'.
