Have a USCIS interview coming up? What actually happens during an immigration interview? Eldridge Crandell partner and immigration lawyer Rachel Girod explains what you should and should’t expect:
You SHOULD expect:
- To wait—in the security line, to be checked in, and to be called for your interview.
- To answer the same questions you answered on the application. The point is to correct or amend anything that has changed or was incorrect in the initial application.
- To be treated with respect. This isn’t a contentious encounter—it’s just an interview and you should be treated respectfully.
You SHOULD NOT expect:
- To have an interpreter provided for you. The interviews are conducted in English, so you need to make accommodations—and don’t anticipate approval for family members as interpreters. It may happen, but it just as easily may not.
- A same-day decision. It’s not a red flag or a worry to leave without a decision. In fact, it’s NORMAL.
- For your attorney to speak for you. Our role is to be a support, to take notes, and to allow you to speak for yourself. We’re there for you, but it’s your account that matters.
