We took this case to a jury. And we won.

The jury ordered NAE Enterprises to pay the McCoy family more than $21.6 million, including $10 million in exemplary damages, after finding the contractor grossly negligent.

This family spent years living with the consequences of construction defects that exposed their home to sewer gas, mold and moisture intrusion.

We believed them. We told their story. And the jury held the company accountable.

A Texas jury returned a verdict of more than $21.6 million, including $10 million in exemplary damages, after finding NAE Enterprises grossly negligent.

They use any word except for the word mold.

“Mildew.” “Dust.” “A little bit of dirt.” “A little bit of growth.”

And this isn’t accidental.

Big companies. Big landlords. They have policies not to use the word mold.

Because if you don’t use the word, you’re never going to hire a certified assessor. You’re never going to hire a certified remediator.

And that mold is going to proliferate.

It’s outrageous. And it makes people sick.

Saturday night, October 10, 2026 was something special.

The Malachi’s Message Foundation Hope Warrior Gala, in partnership with the Safe Housing Collaborative brought 300+ people together at the Four Seasons Austin. Our theme was “A Rising Tide Raises All Ships,” and the room lived up to it. Together, we raised over $300,000 for families affected by mold.

Huge congratulations to Linda Lauver, this year’s Hope Warrior Advocate Award winner. Her career spans more than 2 decades doing this work because it is right, before there was community and support. So well deserved.🔥

Thank you to Tom Riles for keeping the energy high all night, to Wendy for decor that made jaws drop, and to every guest, sponsor, and volunteer who showed up for these families.

Our mission is clear, my heart is full, and I am so proud to continue serving this incredible foundation as Vice President into 2027.

The Wright family didn’t really want to go to trial. We didn’t really want to take their case to trial.

But the landlord just wouldn’t deal. He did not believe that mold causes harm.

So we told the jury the story of a landlord who violated the safety rules.

What does home mean to you?
Should families be able to expect safe air?
Do landlords need to provide a home that is safe?

The jury told us.

They issued a verdict of more than $1 million for a family that had $1,500 in damages.

Juries care.

They want to enforce the safety rules in our country.

What should you NOT do when you discover mold?

Don’t disturb it on your own.

Don’t pick at it. Don’t put bleach on it. You’re gonna make it worse.

When you disturb mold, it can proliferate into the air. That’s why the area needs to be contained before it’s removed.

Call a certified mold assessor. Understand the extent of the problem. Then have it removed safely by a certified professional.

Mold is not a DIY project.

Should you stop paying rent if you find mold?

No. Do not stop paying rent. If you stop paying rent, you often lose your rights.

In Texas, there are steps we can take, including sending certified notice to the landlord and terminating a tenancy on a particular date. But you have to follow the rules.

Know the law in your state. Talk to a lawyer.

Keep paying rent until you have a legal right not to.

First, the client comes to us and shares what happened to them. We talk through what it means to go through litigation.

Then we send notice. We file the case. And from that point, we are always moving toward trial.

We get a trial date. We start discovery. We build the case for trial.

Some cases settle before we get there.

But every case will be trial ready. Every time.
