If Your Atlanta Home Has Original Wood Windows, This Is Worth Knowing. Many Atlanta homes built before the 1950s still have their original wood windows — but a lot of homeowners don’t realize how they were designed to be maintained.

Traditional wood windows use glazing putty to seal the glass into the sash. Over time that putty dries and releases from the glass. When that happens, rainwater can seep behind the glazing and slowly damage the wood.

The good news is that this system was designed to be maintained and repaired, not replaced. A proper reglazing job can often extend the life of original windows for decades.

A few things many homeowners don’t know:

• Traditional glazing putty is made mostly from linseed oil and chalk
• When applied correctly it can last 50–100 years
• Paint should slightly overlap the glass to seal the edge of the putty
• Many modern acrylic or latex putties don’t bond well to historic wood sash

If you own an older home and see cracking putty or small gaps around the glass, it may be time for maintenance — but it’s usually far less invasive than replacing the windows.

Even if your home already has replacement windows, it’s a good reminder that many historic materials were designed to be maintained rather than discarded.
