Family law for q***r and nontraditional families is a specialty, not an afterthought. Being part of this institute keeps me connected to attorneys, advocates, and organizations who are actively shaping how the legal system serves our community.

AI may be able to do a lot of things. But writing the legal documents that protect your family isn't one of them.

May 22 is Harvey Milk Day. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California and one of the first in the country. He was assassinated in 1978, less than a year into his term as San Francisco City Supervisor.

His legacy is inseparable from the legal history of q***r families. The rights q***r people hold today were built on the work of people like him, who showed up visibly and refused to disappear.

At Lavender Root Legal, we do this work because that visibility still matters. Today we honor everyone who made it possible to keep fighting.

Meet our paralegal, Carter Beatty! Carter brings a background in rhetoric, writing, and the politics of language to our team. They hold a BA in English from UNC Greensboro and an MA in Rhetoric and Composition from Ball State, where they deepened their understanding of how language shapes people's experiences. Their paralegal studies degree from Madison Area Technical College brought it all together.

Before joining Lavender Root Legal, Carter worked in writing centers and volunteered with INTERLINK, where they developed a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and individual stories. That same care carries into every case they touch.

When they're not working, you'll probably find Carter with their dog Watson or deep in some q***r horror media.

A child's preference doesn't decide a custody case. Not in North Carolina, not at any age. This is a common misconception. A parent hears their kid wants to live with the other parent and panics. Or they assume that once a child is old enough, the decision can be made by the child.

But that is not the case.

Courts may consider a child's preference once they're mature enough to express a reasonable one. But it's one factor among many. The court's job is to determine what's in the child's best interest. That's a much bigger picture than what a child says they want on any given day.
