The #1 protection strategy when leaving an abusive marriage? Documentation.

Senior Attorney Jim Powers shares what that looks like in real terms:

📝 Text yourself right after an argument — what happened, what was said
🎙️ In Georgia, you can legally audio record a conversation without consent — video requires it
📼 Save every voicemail, especially the threatening ones

You don't have to be ready to leave today. But having this in place means you're protected when you are.

Navigating a difficult relationship? Our team is here to talk it through.

Your future deserves a plan, not a plot.

Divorcing someone with narcissistic tendencies comes with its own playbook — and knowing what doesn't work is just as important as knowing what does.

Kristi Gibbs, Ph.D., spent years as a licensed mental health counselor before practicing family law, and she brings that background into how she guides clients through high-conflict dynamics like these.

Sometimes the right strategy isn't about being right. It's about being smart.

Before beginning the divorce process, it's important not to make assumptions about whether your case will be contested or uncontested without first discussing the full picture with an attorney.

Circumstances can change unexpectedly as more information comes to light and both parties gain a clearer understanding of their rights and options. That doesn't have to mean more conflict, but being prepared from the beginning can help you avoid costly mistakes later.

With more than 120 years of combined family law experience, our team has seen firsthand how valuable it can be to understand exactly where you stand before taking the next step.

The "best" custody schedule isn't universal — it's the one that fits your family.

The right structure depends on factors like your kids' ages, how far apart both households are, each parent's work schedule, and what actually supports stability and routine day to day. A handful of common arrangements tend to work well as starting points, but no template fits every family perfectly. Swipe to see how a few common structures work in practice.

That's why experienced counsel matters . A legal team that takes the time to listen to your goals and understand your family's dynamic can build a plan designed around you, not a cookie-cutter template.

What is the TPO Process in Georgia?

Filing for a Temporary Protective Order involves several key steps: an in-person application at the courthouse, an initial order issued by a judge, service on the other party, and a hearing scheduled within 30 days — where you'll need to present your case to extend those protections for up to 12 months.

The TPO process has a lot of moving parts, and missing a step can cost you time you don't have. At Atlanta Divorce Law Group, we have the experience and forward thinking to make sure clients are prepared and understand exactly what's ahead before they walk into that courthouse.

What is a Temporary Protective Order (TPO)?

A TPO is a civil court order designed to provide protection — and it's separate from your divorce case. In Georgia, a TPO is filed in magistrate court, while your divorce is filed in Superior Court. Two different processes, two different courts.

Senior Attorney Jim Powers breaks this down (and what it really takes to stay protected) in a clip from last month's webinar, "Leaving Abusive Relationships: Protective Orders & Legal Strategies."

Understanding your options is the first step toward safety and clarity. Our team is here to help you navigate both the legal protections available and what comes next.
