It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Balasubramaniam Thanigasalam, Founder and Chairman of MECA.

Mr. Bala dedicated many years to Industrial Relations and played a defining role in establishing and shaping MECA. Through his knowledge, experience, and guidance, he touched the lives and careers of many within the profession.

His passing is deeply felt by all of us at MECA.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and remember him with gratitude, respect, and affection.

Rest in peace, Mr. Bala. Your legacy will remain with us.

How do you teach something people may not even realise they are doing?

At the MECA IR Convention 2026, unconscious bias will be explored through a live dramatization by The Exchange Theatre [under KL Shakespeare Players - Shakespeare Demystified & Cultural Impact], bringing workplace situations to life and giving participants the opportunity to recognise behaviours and assumptions that can be difficult to see from the inside.

It is part of how we are taking the Convention beyond theory and into experiences that encourage reflection and, ultimately, better workplace decisions.

When a PIP is seen as an exit strategy rather than a genuine opportunity to improve, the problem goes beyond the process itself.

Employees may approach it with fear and suspicion rather than engagement, creating the conditions for conflict long before any dismissal takes place.

At the MECA IR Convention 2026, we will take a closer look at the realities of managing poor performance, including where legally sound processes can still lead to disputes.

When an employee is underperforming, knowing there is a problem is only the beginning.

How you assess it, document it, communicate it, and give the employee an opportunity to improve can become critical if the decision is later challenged.

At the MECA IR Convention 2026, Jeremiah Gurusamy of RDJ Law will explore the practical considerations surrounding poor performance.

32 out of 40 poor performance awards reviewed were decided in favour of the employee.

That was the finding from a simple review of recent Industrial Court awards, and it is a statistic that should give employers reason to look more closely at how poor performance is being managed.

Was the employee told clearly what was expected?
Was the performance gap properly established?
Was there a genuine opportunity to improve?
And can the employer demonstrate that the eventual decision was fair?

Poor performance remains one of the areas we will be taking a closer look at during the MECA IR Convention 2026.

Getting the employment contract right does not necessarily mean getting a termination right.

What the contract allows is important. But employers also need to consider whether the decision itself can be properly explained and justified if it is later challenged.

In the first two articles from The Paper Trail | By Dharmen, Dharmen Sivalingam explores both sides of that issue:

πŸ“„ Part 1: Why Getting the Employment Contract Right Is Not Enough

πŸ“„ Part 2: The Question HR Should Ask Before Every Termination

What turns a workplace disagreement into a conflict that refuses to go away?

Sometimes, understanding the law is only half the picture. Understanding the person on the other side of the dispute can be just as important.

At the MECA IR Convention 2026, Poh Yee Loh takes us beneath the surface of workplace conflict to explore the emotions, perceptions, and psychological responses that can drive escalation.

Join us on 7–8 October 2026 as we explore why legally sound decisions do not always prevent conflict.
