“It’s just Facebook.”
“It’s only Threads.”
“It was only a joke.”
These are common excuses—but they are not always legal defences.
In Malaysia, social media is not a legal-free zone. Publishing false statements that damage another person’s reputation may expose you to legal consequences, whether the post is made on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, X, or other online platforms.
Freedom of speech comes with responsibility. Before posting, sharing, or commenting, consider whether your words are accurate, fair, and capable of being substantiated.
Think before you post. Because once it’s online, the consequences may extend beyond the screen.
