According to World Intellectual Property Organization’s latest SPARK report, between 2016 and 2025, there have been over 65,700 sports-related inventions recorded globally, along with more than 1.25 million newly registered trademarks and over 70,000 designs.
The growth in intellectual property is robust across all categories, outpacing global averages: patent applications (+7.6% annually), trademark registrations (+6.1%), design activity (+8.3%).
Activity varies by sport, with golf, swimming, and racket sports being among the most patent-intensive, while fitness technologies lead in design filings.
Beyond the statistics, this World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO Technology SPARK report underscores how innovations such as wearable devices, data analytics, smart equipment, and officiating technologies enhance performance, fairness, and fan engagement.
