A Bengaluru court judgment has gone viral after screenshots circulated showing what is allegedly a ChatGPT-style prompt-and-response exchange inside the published judgment itself.

The pages include phrases such as “If you want, I can…”, suggestions to “tighten the language”, “prepare a separate decree sheet”, and even a follow-up saying, “Got it — thanks for the correction.”

The larger issue is not whether AI can assist legal work. Indian courts have already acknowledged that AI may be useful for preliminary research and assistance.
But the Delhi High Court has cautioned that ChatGPT cannot become the basis for deciding legal or factual issues, while the Supreme Court has recently reiterated that “assistance can never be substituted for adjudication.”

So the real question is: where should the line be drawn between AI-assisted drafting and judicial reasoning?
