Have you found yourself staring at your finances lately and wondering where a receipt went, or what is happening in a certain bank account?

We work with small business owners every day, and we understand that you wear many different hats. We also know how easy it is for the numbers to slip when you're juggling so much.

Here are three classic warning signs that you need some support with your bookkeeping:

1. You’re chasing down receipts from months ago right before tax season

3. You’re not sure what’s coming in versus what’s going out at any given moment

If this sounds familiar, we're here to give you a helping hand. Our straightforward bookkeeping support keeps you organised and fully informed.

If you're not ready to lose another weekend to dreaded spreadsheets, we can help you feel in control of your numbers. 🤝

Running your small business from a spare bedroom or handling work calls on your personal phone? 🏠📱

When it comes to business expenses, many owners assume they can put mixed-use bills straight through their accounts. But if a purchase has a dual purpose (both professional and personal), HMRC rules mean you can only claim the identifiable business proportion.

Here are two common areas where small businesses slip up:

1. If you run your business from home, you can't claim your entire household utility bill. You need to calculate the amount based on your workspace and hours worked, or use HMRC's simplified flat-rate expenses if you're self-employed.

2. If your mobile bill is £50 a month but 40% of your usage is personal, only the 60% business element is tax-deductible. Failing to split mixed-use expenses is a quick way to trigger an HMRC compliance check!

Unsure whether your day-to-day purchases qualify as allowable business expenses? Check out our recent blog post where we dive deeper into the topic, or reach out for support from our team. Link to blog post in comments. 🔽

Salary vs dividends, what’s the difference?

When structured effectively, taking advantage of your annual Dividend Allowance alongside your salary allows you to reduce personal tax liabilities while keeping your business completely compliant. So, what’s the difference between the two?

A salary is an amount of money paid to an employee or director of a business before corporation tax as part of an operating expense. It can be paid even if the company makes a loss of profit overall and it counts towards State Pension.

Dividends are payments made to company shareholders after Corporation Tax as a post-tax retained profit. Dividends can’t be paid unless the business has made a sufficient amount of profit and they do not count towards State Pension.

Every business has unique profit margins and personal income goals, so there is no ratio that fits every organisation.

If you want to make sure your remuneration strategy is structured as efficiently as possible, reach out to the team at One Two One Accounts today for a chat!

The UK government recently published a major package of HMRC consultations.

While these proposals aren't law just yet, HMRC consultations usually pave the way for future legislation. To help you stay ahead of the curve, here is a quick, jargon-free rundown of what’s on the table and how it could affect you:

• HMRC is proposing to collect PAYE and VAT automatically via Direct Debit rather than waiting for you to initiate payment.

• HMRC wants new powers to recover unpaid tax debts directly from business or personal bank accounts in instalments.

• A proposed criminal offence will target careless or reckless errors on tax returns.

• From April 2029, if you earn both PAYE income (like a salary or dividends) and file a Self Assessment, you’ll soon pay more of your tax liability during the tax year rather than facing a lump sum on 31st January.

• The UK has confirmed the Peppol network as its core digital standard for e-invoicing, with a mandate heading our way by 2029.

You don't have to navigate these proposed changes alone. If you need support with your upcoming tax returns, accounting software, or reviewing your cash flow, our friendly team can guide you.

Are you missing out on valuable tax savings that could be reinvested back into your business?

Corporation tax relief allows eligible businesses to deduct specific allowable expenses, investments, and industry incentives from their profits to lower their total tax bill. This can be game-changing for Research and Development projects as well as gaming, film, and other creative industries.

This is a reward for ambition and is used to support growth as it frees up capital, encourages commercial innovation, and makes strategic investments far more affordable.

Because eligibility rules and relief schemes continue to evolve, identifying every potential deduction can make a significant financial difference to your company’s cash flow.

You can read more about corporation tax relief on our website or get in touch to discuss your options!

I regularly speak to business owners who are paying more tax than necessary and watch significant chunks of their hard-earned profits go towards corporation tax.

Effective tax planning can help you maximise the reliefs to which you are legally entitled.

Here are four ways to maximise your position:

1. Directing company profits into a pension
2. Leveraging capital allowances and full expensing rules when purchasing business equipment or new tech
3. Claiming R&D relief if your business is developing new products, processes, software, or improving existing ones
4. Strategically timing salary and dividends, delaying invoicing where appropriate, and bringing forward eligible year-end expenses

If you need support with your tax planning and approaching tax compliance strategically, our team is here to help.
