What the government's crackdown on waste crime means for landowners and rural businesses

Defra has published its Waste Crime Action Plan, the most assertive government response to illegal waste activity in years.

Illegal waste costs the economy around £1 billion annually, and the new Plan signals zero tolerance with tougher enforcement and tighter regulation.

For landowners, the Plan acknowledges the challenges of dealing with illegally dumped waste on private land and explores insurance options for protection. For rural businesses, compliance with waste duty of care obligations is now more important than ever.

The waste duty of care requires ensuring waste is handled by registered carriers, taken to appropriately permitted sites and that accurate records are kept.

Our Head of Criminal Defence explains why you should review your current position now: https://coodes.co.uk/2026/05/what-the-governments-crackdown-on-waste-crime-means-for-landowners-and-rural-businesses/

Five weeks to go until our Three Peaks Challenge team takes on Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon!

After months of climbing in all weathers, Becky Hosken, Lisa Robinson, Haley Hawker, Abi Lutey and Lucy Jewell are counting down the days to put their training to work.

Recent practice routes have included 18-mile moorland walks and night walking to prepare for descending Scafell Pike in the dark.

The team are raising money for Cornwall Air Ambulance, which receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations to attend an average of three missions each day across Cornwall.

They have done a superb job so far, raising over £4,400. There is still time to donate and help make a difference: https://www.justgiving.com/team/coodes-3-peaks

Any support is greatly appreciated by the team and Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Making trust planning tax-efficient for families

As family structures and asset portfolios become more complex, trust planning can provide flexibility, protection and oversight in managing wealth transfer.

Trusts separate legal ownership from beneficial ownership, allowing families to control how and when wealth is accessed rather than transferring assets outright. They are commonly used where beneficiaries are young or vulnerable, where there are concerns about future divorce or creditor claims, or where second marriages create competing interests.

When incorporated into a broader estate planning strategy and maintained with proper review and documentation, trusts can provide stability and long-term reassurance for families navigating complex financial considerations.

Sarah Cornish explains more in this blog: https://coodes.co.uk/2026/04/making-trust-planning-tax-efficient-for-families/

Fertility treatment can unfold over months or years, and sometimes within that time, circumstances change.

Relationships can break down, plans can shift, and decisions that once felt straightforward can become complicated.

Part two of our fertility law guide by Sarah Bell focuses on changing plans, consent withdrawal, storage and why fertility disputes can feel particularly difficult to navigate: https://coodes.co.uk/2026/05/fertility-treatment-and-relationship-breakdown-understanding-your-legal-position-when-plans-change/
