Life after serious injury can feel overwhelming, especially in the early months.

In our latest article, we share Ed Hudson’s reflections on rehabilitation, long-term planning and rebuilding life after a high-level spinal cord injury.

Drawing on his medical background, lived experience and legal training, Ed explores:
- Why early rehabilitation can feel slow
- How specialist support can change what is possible
- Why planning for the long term matters
- How independence is built over time

We hope this piece offers reassurance and perspective to anyone at the start of their journey, or supporting someone through it.

We’re pleased to see this project shared.

Oak Holt shows how important it is to think beyond immediate needs and plan for life in the long term after serious injury. From early accommodation solutions through to a permanent, purpose-built home, collaboration between legal, rehabilitation, case management and design professionals can help create spaces that truly support independence and family life over time.

This home belongs to Ed who now works with us at Barratts Solicitors, bringing his lived experience of serious injury together with medical and legal insight - a perspective that underlines just how important thoughtful, long-term planning can be.

We’re pleased to share our latest case study, Oak Holt, a carefully designed, accessible home created to support long-term independence following a severe spinal cord injury.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design, early planning and collaboration between legal, case management and construction teams can result in a home that meets complex clinical needs while remaining practical, sustainable and future-proofed.

Alison Brooks and Vicki Holmes are enjoying a great start to the medico-legal conference from , highlighting the delays faced by and how to improve early diagnosis and survival rates.
We sadly see clients whose radiology shows cancer but it’s been missed. This can be the difference between survival and terminal cancer. This has to improve, especially when the time from diagnosis to treatment is now even longer.

Thank you SC1 Property Limited for inviting Alison Brooks ( our Senior Partner and head of Clinical Negligence) to the Spinal Injuries Association’s Gunpowder Ball yesterday. This was a wonderful night celebrating the charity’s 50th year.
Fantastic group of people on the table made it fun, whilst raising important funds to support those recovering from . We heard about the lack of specialist support for spinally injured patients in many hospitals and after discharge. The Spinal Injury Association gives vital advice and help.

Thank you to everyone who gave up their time and energy on Sunday, to help Footprints Conductive Education Centre move into their new home. A real team effort by trustees, parents of children who used to attend the Centre, the Rotary Club of Nottingham and our very own Alison Brooks (head of Clinical Negligence and Former Chair of Trustees of Footprints Conductive Education Centre).

Alison Brooks explained that she was first introduced to in the 1980s when a client was travelling to the Peto Institute in Hungary, because of a lack of facilities in the UK. Over many decades, Alison's cerebral palsy clients tell her that without the benefit of they would not have achieved their full potential. The difference the Centre makes to the lives of children is immeasurable.

As you can see from the photos, there is still lots to do, but if the enthusiasm of volunteers on Sunday is anything to go by, we hope it will not be long before staff, parents and children are welcomed into the new facilities.

If you can spare some time, please contact Footprints Conductive Education Centre to attend their next volunteer day in Clifton.

Congratulations to our head of Clinical Negligence, Alison Brooks, who completed the 5km on Sunday in support of the Richard Whitehead Foundation. Fantastic day with such a great inclusive atmosphere.

Alison introduced Richard to Footprints Conductive Education Centre and he agreed to be a patron of their charity, so it was great to see Stephen Frew and Claire Clarkson there from Footprints. Richard Whitehead does an amazing job supporting the charity, which offers Conductive Education to children with Neurological conditions, such as and children with Downs Syndrome.

Alison also met Paige and her colleagues from the Matt Hampson Foundation, who support clients after sports injuries; their beneficiary was able to walk the 5km course after receiving neurophysiotherapy at the Centre, having previously been a wheelchair user. An unbelievable achievement!

Thanks again Richard Whitehead for organising the weather and your continued inspiration to encourage people with disability to achieve their full potential.
