Trade union ballots are changing as part of the wider Employment Rights Act reforms.

Since the 25th of August, new rules allow electronic and workplace balloting for statutory trade union ballots, including ballots relating to industrial action and union elections.

For employers with unionised workforces, this is another change to be aware of as the employment law landscape continues to develop throughout 2026.

While the change is intended to modernise how ballots are carried out, it also makes it important for employers to understand the rules around workplace voting, industrial relations and their responsibilities when dealing with recognised trade unions.

With further employment law changes still to come, keeping policies and procedures under review can help employers prepare and respond appropriately.

It's always wonderful to receive feedback like this 💙

A very kind client recently sent Rosie Davies, Amy Oulson-Jenkins and Matthew Davies vouchers for Bodiam Boating Station and the Lime Wharf Café as a thank you for their hard work.

Gestures like this mean a great deal to the whole team. Going above and beyond for our clients is simply how we work, but it's lovely when it's recognised in such a thoughtful way.

Thank you Rosie, Amy and Matt for the care you show our clients every day! Also a huge thank you to our client for such a generous gift. We hope the team enjoy their day on the water!

Legal advice is easier to act on when you know who is handling your matter, how to contact them and what the likely costs will be.

Stephen Rimmer LLP’s Client Service Charter sets out the standards clients can expect. This includes being told who will work with you and receiving their direct contact details, clear and transparent information about fees, fixed fees where possible, and bills that explain the work completed.

The charter also commits the firm to being friendly, approachable and professional, while taking each client’s needs, expectations and budget into account.

Clear expectations are an important part of a good working relationship from the outset.

More employees than ever feel able to tell their employer they have ADHD. For most organisations that is a good problem to have, provided the response is the right one.

A diagnosis is not automatically protected. ADHD may amount to a disability under the Equality Act 2010 where it has a substantial and long-term effect on day-to-day activities, and it is the impact rather than the diagnosis that decides it. Where it does, the duty to consider reasonable adjustments follows.

The adjustments themselves are rarely dramatic. Flexible hours, written instructions alongside verbal ones, clear deadlines and priorities, a quieter place to work, regular check-ins. Most of them improve clarity and communication for whole teams, not just one person.

The area that catches employers out most often is performance management. Moving straight into a formal process without first asking whether ADHD is a factor, or whether adjustments have been explored, is where discrimination claims tend to begin.

We've written a practical guide for employers and HR teams, covering disclosure, reasonable adjustments, managing performance fairly and why training line managers makes such a difference.

At Stephen Rimmer LLP, we believe legal advice should be clear, practical, and easy to understand.

That's why we're sharing answers to the questions our clients ask most often, helping individuals, employers and business owners stay informed and confident about their legal position.

A common one we get is: How much notice am I entitled to if I'm made redundant?

The law is clear: under the Employment Rights Act, the statutory minimum notice period depends on how long you've worked for your employer.

If you've been employed for between one month and two years, you're entitled to at least one week's notice. After two years, that increases by one week for each full year of service, up to a maximum of twelve weeks.

However, your contract may set out a longer notice period than the legal minimum, so it's always worth checking what you've actually agreed to.

Summer is one of the busiest times of year to move house, and for good reason. Longer days, school holidays, and no icy roads to contend with. Then a heatwave arrives and lifting a sofa into a van at two in the afternoon feels considerably less appealing...

We've pulled together some practical advice for moving in hot weather. Start early while it is still cool, tackle the heaviest items first, pack an essentials bag so you are not hunting through twenty boxes for the kettle, and make arrangements for pets and children so they are not underfoot.

There is a legal side worth planning for too. Solicitors, agents, brokers and removal firms all take annual leave over the summer, so replying quickly to requests, returning signed documents promptly and sending funds well ahead of completion can save days. If you are hoping to complete before a holiday, tell your solicitor as early as you can.
