Need to change your child’s school during the academic year?

An in-year school transfer is the process of moving your child to a different school outside the usual admissions process. Our Education Associate Solicitor, Susannah Millard, explains some of the key things parents need to know:

📚 How do you apply?
Applications are usually made through your local council’s online parent portal, or by completing a paper application form.

📅 When can you apply?
The timeframe for applying can vary between councils, so it’s important to check your local authority’s guidance.

⏰ When will you hear back?
You should usually receive a decision within 15 school days.

🏫 What about your child’s current school?
Open communication with your child’s current school is strongly encouraged throughout the process.

⚖️ What if your preferred school is full?
If your application is refused because the school is full, you may have the right to appeal.

Appeals are heard by an independent panel, giving parents the opportunity to explain their case and, where appropriate, attend the appeal in person.

Every local council has its own in-year admissions process, which should be available on its website.

This year’s Legal 500 rankings have been released, and it’s been another great year for EMG!

What a day it's been! 🎉

We brought colleagues from our Court of Protection Property & Affairs (COPPA) teams across the UK together in Leeds for a special integration event at the award-winning Aspire Leeds venue in the city centre.

It was a fantastic opportunity for colleagues to come together, get to know one another better and strengthen the connections across our COPPA teams.

Members of our COPPA Board also took to the stage to share their insights, followed by team activities and a great lunch.

A brilliant day of collaboration, connection and bringing our people together. 👏 We hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Our latest Family Law video features Sue McArthur, Senior Associate, Solicitor and Mediator in the team.

In the video, Sue explains how mediation can help parents reach arrangements for their children in two ways:

✅ Parent-focused mediation – both parents speak with a mediator and work towards reaching an agreement about arrangements for their children.

✅ Child-inclusive mediation – a specially trained mediator can speak with the child or children, giving them an opportunity to share their views. With the child’s agreement, appropriate feedback can then be shared with the parents to help them make arrangements that work for everyone.

Our CEO, Emma Gaudern, was a speaker at the conference, and we had a stand alongside around 40 other exhibitors. It was a great opportunity to meet many attendees from across the Court of Protection sector.

It was also fantastic to see some of our new Court of Protection colleagues from EMG offices across the UK, and to spend time together enjoying the day!
