Hi everyone,

I just wanted to pop on and say hello, and explain why I’ve been a bit quiet on social media recently. It’s been a very busy time working with clients across Dereham and the surrounding Norfolk areas, so I’ve been focusing on giving everyone the time and support they need.

For those who don’t know me, I’ve been working as an estate planner and will writer for over 17 years. I’m a fully qualified TEP (Trust and Estate Practitioner) through STEP, and I also hold Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance — so you can be reassured you’re dealing with someone experienced and properly qualified.

I support individuals and families across Dereham, Norfolk and nearby areas with:

A warning to be careful if taking on the administration of a loved one's estate yourself.

Last year HMRC recovered £246m in underpaid inheritance tax. I would imagine this was because lay executors hadn't valued the estate correctly. Perhaps they had undervalued such things as antiques or hadn't taken lifetime gifts into account.

HMRC are investigating more estates than ever before. The advancement of the internet helps then. Tools such as google street maps, Land Registry records etc.

So if you are administering an estate, please don't think 'HMRC won't check me' because they might. Be careful and if you need assistance please ask for professional help.

On the flip of this, HMRC are also issuing refunds on overpayments of inheritance tax - for example, in situations where a property has sold for a price less than the executors declared.

Inheritance tax and administration of death estates are complex areas.

When Aunt Marge passed, everyone braced for a somber reading. Instead, the lawyer handed my cousin Leo a small envelope with a single line:

We groaned. Leo opened it and found a cryptic poem referencing family jokes, old vacation spots, and even the backyard treehouse. For hours, we scrambled, retracing memories, decoding hints, laughing at long-forgotten pranks.

This week’s woe stars a man who swore he’d write his will “right after the weekend.”
