Strong professional relationships often start with one good conversation - with someone who understands the challenges, decisions and opportunities facing businesses across the region.

- Who is growing?
- Who is planning ahead?
- Who is navigating change?
- Who could become a trusted contact, adviser or referral partner?

On 16 June, our Business Networking Evening at Birmingham Botanical Gardens will bring together business owners, directors and professional advisers from across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Join us for an evening of practical connections, local insight and conversations that could continue long after the event.

A sole director can now legally conspire with their own company.

That was the High Court’s conclusion in Lux Films Ltd v Fowler, a significant decision for directors, shareholders, and owner-managed businesses.

The judgment confirms that a sole director and the company they control may both face liability in an unlawful means conspiracy claim, particularly where business opportunities, clients, or confidential information have been diverted.

Liga and Osa from our team have taken a closer look at the ruling and what it means in practice for businesses and directors.

Last month, we may not have left the LexisNexis UK Legal Awards 2026 with a trophy, but we’re still incredibly proud to have been recognised with three nominations.

To be shortlisted alongside so many respected firms from across the legal sector was an achievement in itself, and a reflection of the hard work our team puts in every day for our clients.

The team had a brilliant evening catching up with peers from across the industry, and recognising the work being done throughout the sector, (not to mention making the most of a good excuse to get dressed up)!

Congratulations again to all of this year’s winners and finalists, and thank you to LexisNexis UK for hosting such a great event.

Most of us have been there - you follow advice, and later realise it was not the best call.

It feels even worse when you have paid for that advice or delegated something important to a professional (a solicitor, accountant, financial adviser, or insurance broker), and you have been let down.

There is a name for it: professional negligence.

Before it gets out of hand, if you think you have been given negligent advice, someone failed to advise you properly, or missed something they should have picked up, a professional negligence claim may be the right route.

AI can draft a convincing letter in 30 seconds. It looks impressive at first, but disputes are won on evidence, clear wording, and legal judgment built over years of experience.

In business disputes, outcomes often come down to evidence, process and timing:
- what was agreed (and what changed later)
- what was recorded (emails, variations, WhatsApps, invoices)
- what notices were required (and whether they were served)
- what your best commercial outcome actually is

AI can give you speed and structure. But it cannot judge which facts matter, what to concede, or when to push. And crucially, it cannot take responsibility for the decisions you make.

In a recent UKTN article, Satish Jakhu explains why SMEs should not confuse speed with strategy, and what we are already seeing when AI is treated as a substitute for proper dispute planning.

It has been a big few weeks for the team at RLK Solicitors.

In between exams, alongside demanding client work at one of the busiest points in the year, several of our team still found the time and discipline to take on the Birmingham Half Marathon.

Chris Guy, Jonathan Lawrence, Theo Mostert and Jules Gwinnutt all stepped up and delivered. A fantastic effort all round and a real reflection of the mindset we see across the firm every day. Focused, resilient and committed, both in and out of the office.

A particular mention to Jonathan Lawrence, who took it a step further by raising funds for , supporting vital work around men’s mental health and helping drive more open conversations.

With Mental Health Awareness Week taking place from 11 to 17 May, it is an important moment nationally to focus on mental wellbeing, encourage open conversations and highlight the support available to those who may be struggling.

It is also a reminder that high performance cultures only work when they are supported by the right environment. Ambition and wellbeing should go hand in hand. That is something we continue to build on as a firm.

We are incredibly proud of everyone involved. The bar has been set.

Now the question is… who is signing up for next year?

If, like us, you spend a lot of time in the Colmore District, you’ll know how much there is to see and do. In fact, sometimes it’s hard to keep track of it all. Luckily, the Colmore Life app brings it all together in one place, making it easy to keep your finger on the pulse.

One of the most useful tools is the directory of local businesses. You can explore by category or search nearby to discover what’s around you in real time, so it’s a great way to find what you need quickly.

For us, it’s the perfect way to stay connected to the business community we’re part of.

Professional negligence is wider than most people think. We regularly see issues involving:
- solicitors and barristers
- accountants, tax advisers and IFAs
- insurance brokers
- valuers and other specialists

The common thread is reliance: when you are entitled to trust the advice, and the error causes measurable loss, a claim may follow.

Richard Cooper’s recent blog explains the building blocks of a professional negligence claim and what a sensible first assessment looks like.

Some of the best professional relationships start when you simply give them the space to grow.

With that in mind, we’re returning to Birmingham Botanical Gardens for our next Business Networking evening on 16 June.

It’s a setting that perfectly reflects what the evening is all about: giving new connections the chance to take root, and creating the right conditions for professional relationships to blossom.
