A recent political cartoon about migration in Northern Ireland has generated discussion online.

The image appears to assume migrants receive “free housing”, “free money” and “free healthcare”.

The reality is far more complex. Different groups of migrants have different legal statuses, rights and entitlements, and asylum seekers account for only a small proportion of overall migration to Northern Ireland.

Sometimes discussions and debates are based on inaccurate information about who exactly is coming to the UK. There can also be misunderstandings about what rights and benefits various groups of people are entitled to.

In short, FactCheckNI has found that the vast majority of migrants to the UK are legal, and unauthorised migrants are barely entitled to anything at all.

Migration Justice were proud to stand along thousands others rejecting racism in Belfast at United Against Racism's rally on Saturday.

The response from our sector and members of our communities across NI has been seismic. Where statutory bodies have failed, community stepped up.

We have joined with other community and civil organisations to place demands on our political leaders.

We have had many kind messages from people looking to volunteer and support ethnic minority communities. Therefore, we would like to draw your attention to the opportunity to get involved in volunteering with the Community Connectors ❤️

Belfast is a changing place! Through our Community Connections programme we hope to be able to help people navigate the changes and build stronger relationships for the future.

Gems NI and partners, Belfast City of Sanctuary, Migrant Centre NI, Diverse Youths, Business in the Community Northern Ireland and Ballynafeigh Community Development Association are delivering the “Community Connections” programme in Belfast.

The project forms part of the €17.1m Belfast PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan, which is led by Belfast City Council.
Community Connections is seeking individuals from across Belfast to volunteer with our project and support the engagement and delivery of key activities in our Welcome Hub locations, Horn Drive, Cregagh and Morton Community Centres.

We will be offering free training and support to volunteers to help them upskill and understand the project and your engagement will be key to the achievement of key milestones for the project in coming months.

Forward South Partnership have launched a South Belfast Helpline on Thursday 11th June 2026 (Today)

The helpline is to provide support for anyone that lives, works and volunteers in South Belfast. The helpline will support anyone that has been affected by recent events or who may need assistance during this time.

Racist pogroms in our city last night have left communities terrified. This brand of collective punishment - targetting whole groups of people because of the actions of an individual - is racist and it must be challenged.

We have been inundated with requests to act and offers of support. We will be rallying on Saturday at 1pm and we are calling on everyone to be there.

If you want to sponsor this event please get in touch! We want to send the biggest, loudest, most unified message that we will not tolerate race riots in our city.
