Every child has the right to education. However, refugee children and young people arriving in Northern Ireland can face delays and obstacles in accessing school places.

A recent BBC News NI article highlighted the experience of Mona from Anaka Women's Collective's 16+ campaign group, who fled Gaza and says she received more education in her home country than she has been able to access in Northern Ireland. As a refugee aged 16, she has been unable to secure a school or college place since moving to Belfast.

These barriers can affect children's learning, wellbeing and integration into their communities and diminishes their long-term prospects. We commend the children and young people for speaking up and we hope policy makers are receptive.

Calling all community and voluntary organisations across Belfast!

Many community and voluntary organisations encounter immigration issues, even where this is not their main area of work.

To help organisations respond confidently to these queries, Law Centre NI has partnered with Belfast City Council to provide FREE immigration training on asylum and refugee rights through our Welcome Information Programme.

The training is suitable both for organisations already supporting refugees and people seeking asylum, as well as for those with little or no previous experience of these matters.

Being born in the UK doesn’t automatically make your child a British citizen. Only children who are born to British citizen parents, or parents with indefinite leave to remain or EU settled status, are British by birth.
