Once you’re a resident in Spain, one of the first things worth sorting is your Certificado Digital — an electronic certificate that identifies you online and lets you deal with Spanish authorities from your laptop or phone📲

With it, you can file your tax return, get a certificate confirming you have no outstanding tax debts, pay traffic fines, request your registration history, get a criminal record certificate, and even apply for Spanish citizenship — all without a single trip to a government office.

Any adult can get one, whether you’re a Spanish citizen or a foreign resident. If you’re a non-EU resident, you’ll need your NIE first.

To get it, you verify your identity either in person at an accredited office or through video identification online. After that, you install the certificate on any up-to-date browser or your phone, and that’s it.
If you’ve just received your Digital Nomad Visa, getting your Certificado Digital is the very first thing to do. After that comes registering as autónomo and signing up with social security🇪🇸

InterNations published their yearly report based on surveys from tens of thousands of people who have actually made the move👇🏻

For the fifth time in a row they put Spain in their top-10 among the best countries to relocate to. It’s the top European destination – ahead of Portugal and Luxembourg😎

For quality of life specifically, Spain came first in the world for the fifth consecutive year, beating Singapore, the UAE, Japan, and Austria.

According to the report, 20% of respondents moved to Spain specifically for the quality of life, and 8% came for a relaxed retirement. Almost half want to stay permanently

People particularly highlight the accessible and high-quality healthcare, reliable public transport, and how easy it is to travel across Europe.

Spanish immigration comes with a lot of confusing words. Here’s what they actually mean👇🏻

🔹NIE — Número de Identificación de Extranjero
Your Spanish identification number as a foreigner. It’s not a physical document, just a number — but you’ll need it for almost everything: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, paying taxes. It’s yours for life and never changes.

🔹 TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero
Your physical residence card. This is what proves you have the legal right to live in Spain. Once your visa is approved, you have 30 days to apply for it. The TIE is what most people mean when they say «residence card.»

🔹 Empadronamiento
Your registration at the local town hall confirming you live at a specific address in Spain. It doesn’t give you residency, but you’ll need it to apply for your TIE, enrol children in school, access public healthcare, and much more. It also needs renewing every two years.

🔹 Autónomo
The Spanish term for self-employed. If you’re a freelancer on the Digital Nomad Visa, registering as autónomo with the tax office and social security is a legal requirement once you have your TIE.

🔹 Cita previa
Simply means «prior appointment.» Almost every government office in Spain works by appointment only — the immigration office, the town hall, the police station. You’ll hear this term constantly, and booking one early is always the right move.

Getting one as a non-EU citizen is a different story🤷‍♀️

Getting a work permit in Spain as a non-EU citizen isn’t straightforward. The employer has to sponsor the process, and most companies simply won’t take that on for a foreign candidate when there are EU applicants available.

That’s why the Digital Nomad Visa is often the more realistic route in. You move to Spain, keep your existing job and income, and your adult family members get the right to work in Spain just like any other resident.

Having a Spanish residence permit for five years isn’t enough on its own. To qualify for permanent residency, you also need to have spent enough time actually living in Spain: no more than ten months absent in total across the five years, and no single trip longer than six consecutive months❗️

One of our clients held a Non-Lucrative Visa for nine years but hadn’t met the residency requirements during that time. She had to start her permanent residency clock from scratch🙈

This isn’t a technicality you can sort out later. Permanent residency requires a solid plan from day one, knowing the rules before you start, not after you’ve already spent years getting it wrong.
