The Canadian Government encouraged adding vermiculite to attics before the danger of asbestos was known. It is not a danger if it is not disturbed. If your home was built before or during the 1970's there is a good chance that vermiculite was the insulation of choice as it was very easy to add. Open the bag and pour it between the rafters.

It is not the exposure to asbestos that triggers your right to compensation. You may have extensive exposure, but until diagnosed with an asbestos disease, you can do nothing. Every action, including asbestos cases, requires two events to come together. Exposure to specific identifiable asbestos products before December 31, 1982 (liability) and an asbestos disease (damages). You cannot get compensation without both.

We must be able to prove both aspects for you to receive compensation. This means known locations and definitive diagnosis.

If you have had recent exposure to asbestos, it is not possible for you to have one of the compensable asbestos diseases as they all take many years to develop.

What you can do is document your exposure and keep photographs and documentation regarding the when, how and why of your exposure. While you may never need it, should you be diagnosed with an asbestos caused problem down the road, having it will make the process easier.

There was a time in the not too distant past when asbestos was considered to be a miracle product that kept heat in or out, prolonged longevity of flooring and gaskets and was a great lightweight filler in concrete products.

Now that the public is aware of the danger of inhaling asbestos, we need everyone to understand that removal or remediation is not always the best solution as the removal process can make the fibre airborne.

Sometimes encapsulation is the right solution.
