If you are purchasing travel insurance for you summer vacation we have learned that many large insurers, including Manulife, Sun Life and Desjarden, are adding the current jet fuel shortage as a "known event". This means that if your vacation is cancelled or delayed by the lack of fuel to get your plane off the ground, you are not covered for this circumstance.

Read and understand your policy. If you know the cost vs. coverage implications you are less likely to be caught unaware if something goes wrong during your travels.

If you operate a bicycle on the sidewalk you could receive a ticket. Vehicles pulling into driveways or parking lots will not be aware of your presence as bikes at speed are very different than pedestrians.

Accidents that occur when a rider is on the sidewalk are subject to a deduction for contributory negligence as you should not have been in that location.

If you need a personal injury lawyer, call the office if you have been injured in a bicyle/vehicle collision. It can be a complicated process.

INSURANCE INSURANCE INSURANCE!!! This is why you need to make sure you have insurance coverage when travelling. I slipped on a rock when getting into the ocean and ended up with a fracture at my ankle. Accidents happen and thankfully I have insurance coverage in place to pay for this. This is the first time I have ever had to use our insurance coverage, and I am so glad that I have it because it's not cheap to hurt yourself! No one likes to spend the extra money on insurance, but you are very happy you have it when you need it!!!

Do you need a vacation after all this cold weather? Getting away from a Canadian winter is definatly a bonus, but there are steps to prepare your home for your absence.

Do you have travel insurance?
Have you unplugged all charging devices and power bars?
Have you shut off the watermain so your house does not flood?
Are you confident that the person checking your home for insurance purposes is reliable?
While you are away, please don't advertise that your home is empty by posting travel photos. Leave that task for when you return.

Once you complete all of these suggestions, go and enjoy being away from the cold.

Over the last month we have tried to persuade you that having a Will is the best kind of adulting you can do. Are you convinced?

To enable you to decide if NOW is the the time to prepare your documents, the cost for an individual to prepare a Will is $550.00. The total for the Will and both POA's is $725.

If you are part of a couple, your costs for Wills is $745.00 and all six (6) documents is $950.00. These are called reciprocal Wills when a couple wants mirror documents.

This is Canada, so add GST to those amounts, and you will be able to know how much peace of mind will cost if you use Brown Law to draft your straightforward simple documents.

We have given you lots of reasons to do a Will, but now we need to turn to an even more important document. A Power of Attorney permits someone to make decisions on your behalf while you are still alive, but not able, for whatever reason, to consent to help or treatment that you need.

A Power of Attorney for Health will solve that hurdle.

Also necessary is a Power of Attorney for Property. The term Property is basically your world, less health decisions. Receiving income and paying the bills and dealing with your finances is regulated by this document.

Your POA for Health and your POA for Property do not need to name the same person(s) if the people closest to you have different roles and abilities in your life.

A Will "package" usually involves a Will and two Powers of Attorney, one for medical decision and one to manage your finances. Call our office to get information on what your circumstances. require.
