But here are some tips to help you get approved:

👉Cover letter: tell the officer why you’re visiting, how you can afford it and why you need to return home.
👉Documents to back up the words in your cover letter
👉Don’t just list your home ties. Explain why they matter.

Visitors can stay in Canada for 6 months.

The only exception is when the officer stamps your passport with an earlier exit date.

You can extend your visitor status in Canada by applying online for a "visitor record". As long as you applied before your original status expired, you can remain inside Canada until a decision is made - no matter how long it takes.

Spousal sponsorship is about 2 things:

1. Sponsor’s financial ability to support their spouse without relying on social assistance for basic needs.
2. Showing a real relationship that wasn’t entered mainly for immigration purposes.

Your evidence should show the relationship naturally developing from the beginning until today. That can include:

👉Messages and call logs from different periods of the relationship
👉Photos from different trips, milestones, and stages of the relationship
👉Records of visits if you're long distance (flight bookings)
👉Support letters from family and friends that know about your relationship
👉Shared finances (sending money)

The goal is to make it easy for the officer to follow your relationship chronologically and understand how it developed. A few good photos or screenshots are not enough. The strongest applications show a consistent relationship over time.

Once you're married, applying for sponsorship right away actually makes sense. You want to start your life together in Canada as soon as possible.

Spousal sponsorship applicants can get a work permit. One of the requirements is that you’re living in Canada.

Since these work permits can take months to process, taking a short trip outside Canada while you wait is generally fine. Just make sure you have a valid visa or travel document to return to Canada.

Problems happen when you start spending significant time outside Canada. An officer could question whether you’re actually residing in Canada, which could put your work permit application at risk.

Communication can make or break your spousal sponsorship application. If you're in a long-distance relationship, your text messages will be some of your strongest relationship evidence.

Here's some tips:

👉Don't just submit random screenshots. Show messages from different stages of the relationship so the officer can see consistent communication over time.

👉I tell my clients to go back as far as they can and take screenshots every few months, all the way to the present. Make sure the dates are visible.

👉The wording doesn't always have to be lovey-dovey. Normal conversations about work, family, trips, finances, future plans, problems, and everyday life can actually help show that the relationship is genuine and natural.

👉If it's not in English or French, get it translated (certified)

To sponsor your partner without being married, you need to qualify as common-law partners.

That means living together in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 continuous months.

You need evidence of both cohabitation and a genuine marriage-like relationship.

Inland and outland spousal sponsorship have very different appeal options.

With inland, you have to go to Federal Court, where you cannot add new evidence. You can only rely on the original application to argue that the officer’s refusal was legally unreasonable.

With outland, you can appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD), submit new evidence, and even call witnesses. This gives you a better chance to fight your refusal.

That’s why choosing the right sponsorship category is very important.
