Canadaโ€™s citizenship certificate backlog is growing sharply, and the latest processing time should get the attention of anyone waiting for proof of Canadian citizenship. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

As of September 2026, IRCCโ€™s estimated processing time for a citizenship certificate reached 33 months, or nearly three years.

The backlog has also grown significantly, with 136,000+ applications awaiting a decision.

This matters because a citizenship certificate is the official proof of Canadian citizenship and may be needed before obtaining a Canadian passport or accessing other citizenship-related services.

If you have already applied, or you are planning to apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate / proof of citizenship, make sure you understand the current processing environment and whether you may qualify for urgent processing based on your circumstances.

Important: 33 months is an estimated processing time, not a guarantee that every application will take that long.

A common misconception about Canada PR is that you need 5, 10 or more years of work experience before you can even consider applying. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

That is not a universal requirement.

For some Express Entry pathways, you may qualify with 1 year of qualifying work experience. Other immigration programs and PNP streams have their own eligibility requirements.

What matters is more than simply the number of years youโ€™ve worked:

- Your occupation and NOC
- Whether your experience is qualifying work experience
- Your language test results
- Your education and ECA, where applicable
- Your CRS score
- The specific Express Entry or PNP pathway you may qualify for

So before deciding โ€œI donโ€™t have enough experience for Canada PR,โ€ check the actual requirements for your profile.

One year of experience does not automatically mean you qualify. But you may have more options than you think.

The new general minimum wage rates are:

- Ontario: $17.95/hour
- Prince Edward Island: $17.30/hour
- Nova Scotia: $17.00/hour
- Manitoba: $16.40/hour
- Saskatchewan: $15.70/hour

If youโ€™re working in Canada, hiring workers, or planning to apply for a Canadian work permit, thereโ€™s an important distinction to understand:

Minimum wage is not the same as the wage requirement for an LMIA.

For temporary foreign workers, the applicable wage can depend on the occupation, location, prevailing wage and the specific LMIA / Temporary Foreign Worker Program requirements. Simply meeting the provincial minimum wage does not automatically mean a position meets LMIA requirements.

IRCC now allows up to 90 days to submit the required LMIA or CAQ in eligible concurrent-processing situations, instead of 60 days. Canada

- Your work permit must be expiring in 2 weeks or less.
- Your employer must have submitted a complete LMIA or CAQ application.
- You can submit your work permit extension application before receiving the LMIA/CAQ decision, if you meet the requirements.
- You then have 90 days from submitting your work permit application to provide the LMIA/CAQ.
- If the required document isn't submitted within 90 days, your application may be refused as incomplete. Canada
