📢Oct 1 - Honourable Marc Miller, announced an agreement with the Government of Yukon to help temporary workers gain permanent residency.

This initiative allows up to 215 identified temporary workers to receive new work permits while their applications are processed through the Yukon Nominee Program, with an expected transition to permanent residency in 2025 and 2026. These workers are crucial for filling job vacancies and supporting the region's economy.

IRCC has implemented similar measures in Alberta and Manitoba and is open to collaborating with other provinces to assist more temporary residents in achieving permanent status.

The federal government is committed to supporting critical sectors in regional economies while providing skilled workers with clear pathways to permanent residence.

The meeting between Immigration Minister Marc Miller and provincial representatives focuses on strategies to manage and control the rapid growth of immigration. This can lead to a more streamlined process and better outcome for immigrants and the country as a whole when all provinces, territories, and the federal government work together.

This includes the need of both temporary and permanent residents, support systems for newcomers, and addressing regional economic requirements alongside the community's capacity to accommodate population growth.

There’s still collaboration needed between Ottawa and the other provinces to address issues related to international students and the issuance of post-graduation work permits, ensuring alignment with labor market demands. Moreover, there are ongoing challenges related to the financial burdens of accommodating the growing influx of asylum seekers across Canada.

This clearly shows some remarkable changes in the coming future.

Miller said he and his counterparts discussed the balance between temporary and permanent residents as well as supports for newcomers.

"This should have happened some time ago" 🇨🇦 Federal government announces 2-year cap on student visas - Measure to limit international student permits comes in response to housing crunch.

➡ Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced Monday that the federal government will cap the number of student visas over the next two years. Approximately 360,000 undergraduate study permits for 2024 — a 35 per cent reduction from 2023.

➡ In addition to the cap, the federal government will also require international students applying for a permit to provide an attestation letter from a province or territory.

➡ Each province and territory will be allotted a portion of the total.

➡ Those who currently hold the study permits won't be impacted.

➡ Starting in September, international students who begin a program that's part of a curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.

➡ Graduates of Master's, PHD and other "short graduate-level programs" will "soon" be able to apply for a three-year work permit. OWP will also be made available to the spouses of international students in master's and doctoral programs.

➡ Spouses of International students will no longer be eligible for Open Work Permits (SOWP) with the exception of Masters, PHD and specialized programs in medicine and law.
