Please help us welcome our summer interns, Niklas and Justin!

This summer, we've expanded our team to include two exceptional undergraduate students who are bringing a fresh, youthful perspective and energy to the office.

Niklas is a Kinesiology student (and my son!😉), while Justin is a Computer Science student aspiring to be a lawyer.

They will both be learning all the ins and out of the administrative side of running a law firm, as well as exposure to the legal side of how real estate, corporate, and estate planning files work.

At Baruss Legal, we believe the best way to shape Calgary's tomorrow is by supporting the students of today. We love giving young people a chance to experience law at it’s best!

I’ll be stepping away from the office and heading to Nova Scotia to walk down the aisle! 💍👰‍♀️

During my absence, my incredible team will be there to assist you! Their capable hands will keep all our clients fully looked after, files moving forward, and making sure that everything is running like clockwork.

While I am beyond excited to start this new chapter in my life, I want to assure my clients that I will be returning as the same experienced lawyer with the same passion and commitment to my business and team.

But.... there will be a name change. As of June 6, 2026 I will begin the transition to becoming Cherie Campbell!😉

If you’re thinking it, you should feel comfortable saying it. If you don't feel comfortable asking your lawyer a question, you might have the wrong lawyer. 😉

We have a strict rule at Baruss Legal: there is no such thing as a dumb question. We encourage the "what-if," the "how-does-this-work," and the "can-you-clarify-that?" Our job is to make sure you understand everything we discuss.

An easement gives an individual or corporation the right or privilege to a limited use of lands that belong to someone else.

The most common easement in Alberta is for utility companies (like Enmax, ATCO, or Epcor). It gives them the right to run power lines overhead or gas pipes underground.

If you have an easement on your property, you cannot build over it. That means no hot tubs, no decks, and no permanent fences over that specific strip of land. Even if it's a small shed that doesn't require a permit. If you do, the utility company has the legal right to tear it down to get to their lines.

This is why getting a Real Property Report (RPR) and having a lawyer review your land title is so critical before you buy. You need to know where these hidden lines are drawn so your future backyard plans don't vanish overnight.

It’s finally here! The unofficial start of Alberta's summer, camping season, and our reward to surviving winter! (Please don’t let it snow 😂)

We talk a lot about protecting your future, but we also believe in making the most of your present. Real work-life balance isn't just a buzzword to us—it’s about making time for the people that matter most to us, or heading out to the mountains to relax and recharge (even if you have to keep your parka in the trunk just in case 😉).

Our office will be closed on Monday so our team can enjoy a well-deserved extra day off with their families. We’ll be back on Tuesday, refreshed and ready to tackle paperwork!

Whether you’re camping, gardening, or just enjoying a quiet backyard this weekend, we wish you happy trails and a safe long weekend!

We’ve all been there: digging through junk drawers or old boxes looking for that one specific piece of paper. But when it comes to your Will, your Title insurance, or your Corporate records, "somewhere in the basement" isn't quite enough.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 & 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟: Invest in a small safe or a digital vault for originals.

𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩𝐬: Keep scanned copies, but remember, in Alberta, the "Original" is often the one that counts for the courts.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦": Tell your Executor, a trusted friend or family member exactly where documents are, and where the key (or code) is kept.

In moments when they’re needed most, having everything organized and accessible can take away a lot of unnecessary stress and uncertainty.
It’s a small step that brings a lot of peace of mind.

Whether you are a mom by birth, by choice, or by a beautiful twist of fate, you are the heartbeat of our community.

They say a lawyer’s job is to protect and advocate. Mothers are the original "advocates." Long before I was drafting contracts, I was managing schedules, protecting the peace, and learning the kind of heart-centered leadership that keeps a family moving forward.

With my own kids away for secondary school in another province, the house is a lot quieter, but my perspective has never been clearer. Being a mom hasn't just changed my life; it has fundamentally made me a better lawyer. It taught me that behind every file is a person, a family, and a future that needs to be handled with care.

To the world, you are a mother. To your family, you are the world. Happy Mother’s Day!

In an Alberta real estate deal, do you really need both?

𝐀 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐩: a high-precision drawing by a surveyor that shows exactly where the house, deck, and fence sit on the land. It tells you if that "brand new" garage is actually encroaching on city land or if the fence is on your neighbor's lawn.
It's all about 𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒚.

𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝: an insurance policy that protects you if a problem isn't on the map, or if a problem is discovered after you move in (like a previous owner doing renovations without a permit).
It’s all about 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.

The short answer? usually, YES! We will always recommend both but we will give you the best possible advice and let you make the right decision for you.
