Can mediation make separation easier?

Divorce mediation allows separating spouses to work toward agreements about parenting, support and property without asking a judge to make every decision.

Our new Ontario guide explains how mediation works, how to prepare, when to involve a lawyer and when another legal process may be more appropriate.

Form 13 or Form 13.1?

The correct answer depends on the claims in your Ontario family law case.

Form 13 is generally used for support claims without property issues. Form 13.1 is used when property or exclusive possession of the matrimonial home is also in issue.

Our new guide covers:

Required financial information
Supporting documents
Update deadlines
Common mistakes
Consequences of incomplete disclosure

When a child starts rejecting a parent after separation, the reason matters.

It may involve parental alienation, but family conflict, problems in the parent-child relationship, or legitimate safety concerns can also play a role.

Our new article explains how Ontario family courts approach parental alienation, including:

possible signs of alienating behaviour
parental alienation vs. estrangement
evidence courts may consider
Section 30 assessments
involvement of the Office of the Children's Lawyer
remedies available in serious cases

If your relationship with your child is changing during a separation, understanding your options early can be important.

Separation is about more than simply ending a relationship—it also means making important decisions about parenting, support, property, and finances.

A separation agreement allows couples to resolve these issues privately and on their own terms. Understanding the role of financial disclosure, independent legal advice, and effective co-parenting can help lay the foundation for a more stable future.
