Violence gets racialised when the offender is African or a migrant. But when women are abused, assaulted and killed, the outrage suddenly looks very different.

If you care about violence in Australia, care about all of it.

Apparently, everything is the migrants’ fault these days.

Never mind decades of policy decisions, poor planning and complex economic problems.

Migrants didn’t create these problems, and blaming them certainly won’t fix them.

Time for facts, not scapegoats.

Have we lost control of our borders? 🇦🇺

That’s a phrase we’re hearing a lot in the migration debate right now.

But when you actually look at how Australia’s immigration system works, it’s incredibly complex, regulated and full of eligibility requirements.

Take international students.

There’s a growing narrative that students can simply study here, graduate and automatically stay. That’s not how it works.

The Temporary Graduate visa has requirements around qualifications, occupation pathways, skills assessments, English, age, health, character and Australian study.

And international students make a significant economic contribution too. International education contributed almost $55 billion to Australia’s economy in 2025, with more than $30 billion spent on goods and services here in Australia.

We should absolutely talk about migration numbers, housing, infrastructure and population planning.

But blaming migrants and international students for complex problems doesn’t make those problems simple.

Let’s have the conversation with the facts and actual data.

Yes, crack down on dodgy migration agents, unregistered operators and lawyers who exploit migrants. They have no place in this profession.

But let’s not lose sight of who the victims actually are.

There are more than 5,500 registered migration agents in Australia. In 2025–26, 28 were sanctioned, around 0.5% compared with the size of the registered profession.

Meanwhile, temporary visa holders, including PALM workers, international students and working holiday makers, can be particularly vulnerable to exploitation because of the power others may hold over their employment, income and immigration status.

At a time when there is already so much negativity directed towards migrants, we should be talking more about how we protect them, make it safer to report exploitation and hold the people exploiting them accountable.

Crack down on the bad actors. Absolutely.

But migrants aren’t the problem. The people exploiting them are.

🚨‼️Major Student visa changes are now in effect in Australia.

From 2 October 2026, applying for a Student visa from inside Australia has become significantly more difficult.

If you already hold a Student visa, your current visa is not cancelled or changed by these new rules. Applications lodged before 2 October will also be assessed under the previous rules.

However, if you need a new Student visa or an “extension”, you may now have to leave Australia and apply from offshore—unless you qualify for an exemption.

These changes may also affect people wanting to switch from another temporary visa to a Student visa, as well as students who later want to add partners or children to their visa.

Before enrolling in another course, paying tuition fees or making travel plans, check whether you can apply from inside Australia.

🚨 Major student visa changes started on 2 October 2026.

If you’re studying in Australia, or planning to, these changes could affect your next visa application.

Here’s what changed:

1. Holders of 17 temporary visas, including Working Holiday, 482, 485 and Visitor visas, can no longer apply for a Student visa from inside Australia.
2. Most current Student visa holders must now apply offshore for their next Student visa, unless an exemption applies.
3. If you’re required to apply offshore, you must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
4. Partners and children can now only be included in limited circumstances.
5. Family members can no longer simply be added after the Student visa has been granted.

✅ Grandfathering applies: if you lodged your application before 2 October 2026, the previous rules continue to apply to that application.

There are also exemptions for some students, including certain PhD students, school students, DFAT or Defence-sponsored students, and students progressing to a higher level of study.

Before enrolling, paying course fees or making travel plans, get advice on how the new rules apply to you.

Are we really experiencing “mass migration” in Australia? 🇦🇺

The post-COVID spike was extraordinary. But NOM has since fallen substantially to around 292,000, roughly 1% of our population.

That isn’t historically unprecedented.

The bigger issue may be where population growth is happening. Around 85% of net overseas migration went to our capital cities in 2024–25, with Sydney and Melbourne alone receiving 52%.

So I understand why our biggest cities can feel like they’re growing too quickly.

Maybe we need less fear and misinformation about migration, and a much better conversation about population planning, regional migration, housing and infrastructure.

Migration has always been part of Australia’s story. 🌏
