Did migrants cause Australia’s housing crisis?

Or did we invite people to dinner and forget to put enough chairs at the table? 👀

Migration increases housing demand. That’s not really up for debate.

But demand is only half the equation.

Maybe it’s time we talked about the other half.

There’s a lot of noise around immigration right now, and if you’re a migrant in Australia, I understand why some of the headlines might feel unsettling.

Yes, policy changes matter. They can affect processing times, priorities and pathways.

But headlines don’t tell the whole story.

Australia still needs skilled migrants. We still have significant skills shortages. And multiculturalism remains one of this country’s greatest strengths.

So stay informed, get advice about what actually affects you, and don’t let every headline make you feel like migrants are no longer wanted here.

Migrants are part of Australia’s story, and part of its strength. 🌏

We need to stop treating Net Overseas Migration (NOM) like a scorecard for whether Australia’s immigration system is working.

First misconception: NOM is not the number of migrants who arrived in Australia.

If 500,000 migrants arrive and 300,000 leave, NOM is 200,000.

But even knowing that number tells us very little about whether we have the right migration mix.

Who is coming? Who is leaving? What skills are we gaining? Are we bringing in the construction workers, engineers, healthcare workers and carers Australia actually needs?

And yes, population growth puts pressure on housing. But different migrants create very different housing demand, while migrants can also be part of increasing housing and service capacity.

So instead of simply asking “How low should NOM be?”, maybe we should be asking:

What migration does Australia actually need?

Because good migration policy should be about more than chasing one headline number.

We talk a lot about “visa hopping”. We don’t talk enough about why it happens.

I meet international students who have spent 5, 7, sometimes almost 10 years studying, working, paying taxes and contributing to Australia, without ever having been given a clear migration strategy.

Sometimes I can help them find a pathway.

Sometimes, frankly, it’s too late.

Not everyone who studies in Australia should get permanent residency. But people deserve honest advice early enough to make informed decisions about their future.

Year eight is far too late to start making a plan.

We talk a lot about the pressures created by population growth.

We talk much less about the pressures created by not growing.

Australia’s fertility rate is forecast to fall to a record low of 1.42 children per woman, while the population continues to age. That means fewer working-age people supporting a growing older population over time.

Migration doesn’t “solve” ageing, migrants age too, but younger migrants can slow that demographic shift, add to the workforce and expand the skill base.

So the real question isn’t whether population growth is good or bad.

It’s whether we plan for it properly.

Housing. Infrastructure. Skills. Services. Productivity.

If Australia chooses to grow, those policies need to grow with it.

This Endometriosis Awareness Month, we’re partnering with Endometriosis Australia through the EndoThrive Workplace Accreditation Program to strengthen awareness, education and support in our workplace.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 7 people presumed female at birth, yet many continue to face challenges in silence. Creating supportive workplaces is an important step toward change.

Today is International Women’s Day — but the truth is, women deserve more than just one day of recognition.

At One Planet Migration, we believe that when women are empowered, entire societies thrive.

Countries that invest in gender equality consistently experience stronger economies, healthier communities, and more stable governments. For example, Iceland, Norway and New Zealand — nations that rank among the highest in gender equality — also rank among the most prosperous, safest and happiest countries in the world.

Research also shows that when women participate in leadership and peace processes, the results are more sustainable. In fact, peace agreements are 35% more likely to last at least 15 years when women are involved in negotiations (UN Women). Nations such as Rwanda, which has the highest proportion of women in parliament globally, have seen remarkable post-conflict rebuilding, economic growth and social stability.

When women lead, the focus often shifts toward education, healthcare, community wellbeing and long-term prosperity — foundations that strengthen entire nations.

International Women’s Day reminds us how far we’ve come, but also how much work remains. True equality is not achieved in a single day — it is built through everyday actions, policies, and opportunities.

So today we celebrate the incredible women in our community, our clients, and our team — and we continue working toward a world where every woman has the opportunity to lead, contribute and succeed.

Because when women rise, everyone rises.
