Engineers: Queensland Could Be Your Pathway to Permanent Residency

Queensland has launched the Building and Construction Pathway, creating exciting opportunities for skilled building and construction workers.

If you are an engineer in Australia and are looking to stay permanently, this could be the right time to explore your migration options.

Eligible candidates may be considered for nomination under the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) or the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491), provided they meet the minimum requirements.

Many engineers are uncertain about whether their occupation is eligible or how competitive their profile may be.

Understanding your options early can help you identify the most suitable pathway and avoid missing potential opportunities.

Completed a doctorate in Canberra? This could fast-track your pathway to permanent residency.

The ACT offers a Doctorate Streamlined Nomination pathway for eligible applicants who completed a doctoral degree at an ACT university.

Eligible candidates may benefit from:

• Simplified nomination process
• Minimal supporting documents
• Priority processing
• No ACT nomination application fee

Applicants must still meet the relevant visa requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs.

If currently living in Canberra:

Must have lived in the ACT for at least 12 months at the time of invitation and completed a professional or research doctorate at an ACT university.

If living interstate or overseas:

May still be eligible if your doctorate from an ACT university was awarded within the last 2 years.

This pathway may create valuable opportunities for recent graduates and highly skilled professionals seeking Australian permanent residency.

De facto requirement under the Subclass 186 (TRT) visa

When applying for the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186 – Temporary Residence Transition stream), a common question relates to de facto relationships and the 12-month requirement.

The requirement to demonstrate at least 12 months in a de facto relationship may not apply where the relationship is officially registered under Australian law.

However, applicants must still meet the definition of a de facto partner and satisfy all other relevant criteria.

Eligibility will always depend on the specific circumstances of each case.

Important update for employers and applicants using the Training Visa Subclass 407 in Australia.

From 11 March 2026, the process for lodging a Subclass 407 visa application has changed. Previously, the sponsorship application, nomination and visa application could be submitted at the same time. Under the new amendment, this is no longer possible.

Now, both the Temporary Activities Sponsor approval and the nomination for the occupational training program must be approved before a valid Subclass 407 visa application can be lodged. This means applicants must wait for these approvals before submitting their visa application.

For businesses and applicants planning to use the 407 Training Visa, this change highlights the importance of planning ahead and structuring the application process correctly.

Thinking about applying for the 186 TRT?

A new rule just came out, and it’s important. From now on, the 2 years of work experience you need must be done ONLY with an approved sponsor.

This means you must work full-time for an approved sponsor, in Australia, with no periods of unpaid leave, and in the same occupation as your 482 visa.

These 2 years must be completed within the last 3 years before applying.
It’s particularly important to keep this in mind if you are changing employers while on a 482 visa.

This change means you need to plan well so you don’t lose time or eligibility.

Thinking about travelling home for Christmas while your visa is still being processed?

Good news: yes, you can travel.

If you are currently on a Bridging Visa A, you must apply for a Bridging Visa B (BVB) before leaving Australia and advise the Department of Home Affairs of your travel plans.

A BVB ensures you can travel overseas and re-enter Australia while your substantive visa is processing.
