Ministerial Direction 120 has now come into effect for National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) applications.

The new Direction sets out how National Innovation Visa (NIV) applications are prioritised and considered, including guidance on the types of achievements that may support an application. While much of the framework may appear familiar, there are some important developments that prospective applicants should not overlook.

New Skilled Visa Processing Priorities Announced

The Australian Government has replaced Ministerial Direction 119 with Ministerial Directions 121 and 122, introducing new processing priorities for both temporary and permanent skilled visas.

The changes prioritise key industries experiencing workforce shortages, including construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture and resources. They also give priority processing to many highly skilled workers applying through the Specialist Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa.

For many applicants and employers, these changes provide greater certainty and may reduce concerns that arose when MD119 was introduced earlier this year.

A safe phone can be a lifeline - if you have one, here's what you should know about the upcoming National AusAlert test.

🚨𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟳 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🚨

Australia's new national emergency warning system, AusAlert, will be tested across the country on Monday, 27 July 2026.

During the test, compatible mobile phones will:

📳 Vibrate
🔊 Play a loud siren-like warning sound for approximately 10 seconds
📱 Display an AusAlert test message on the screen

For many people, this will simply be a routine systems test. However, if someone is experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV), particularly those who rely on a safe phone that is hidden from a perpetrator, this alert could pose a significant safety risk.

If you have a safe phone, or know someone who does, consider turning it off for the entire day.

While the test is scheduled for the times below, it may be safest to keep the device powered off throughout the day in case alerts are distributed earlier than expected.

Please consider sharing this information with anyone who may be at risk.

Today we celebrate a powerful and deeply meaningful outcome.

Ruppert Legal recently assisted a woman who arrived in Australia as a dependant on her husband’s visa. Behind closed doors, she endured years of serious domestic violence. The situation escalated to a life‑threatening incident, after which her partner fled the country.

Despite this, the risks did not end. She faced real fear of returning home, having been threatened with harm to both her and her children.

We prepared a Protection visa application on the basis of membership of a particular social group — women who have experienced domestic violence. The application was supported by detailed evidence and relevant case law addressing her unique circumstances.

The result: her visa was granted - no appeals, no Ministerial Interventions.

She and her children can now rebuild their lives in safety.
Protection visas are complex and often difficult to obtain, particularly in cases that fall outside more traditional pathways of persecution. This makes the outcome even more significant.

Today is a reminder of what the system can achieve at its best — protecting lives and providing a pathway to safety and dignity.
