Student Visa Update

The Federal Government has stopped new international student enrolments in the Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) amid concerns about misuse of the course for visa purposes.

Existing students can continue their studies.

The student visa system as it stands is open to abuse. It is being used as a backdoor way for whole families to relocate to Australia. The focus for these people has often been low-skilled work, not study. The “study” has often been a tick box to get them into the country. Some in the education sector have been more than happy to play along with this.

If genuine students want to come to Australia by themselves for a finite period of time to engage in serious study, then there can be some value in this. But very often this has not been what we have been seeing.

Once someone on a student visa has completed their study, they should only be allowed to stay if they have the skills we need and are able to secure a skilled visa. This should be at the discretion of the Department of Home Affairs, which should have strict standards.
