🏠 Insurance is becoming a luxury 🏠

“Do I go without food for three days a month to have insurance? Can’t do that. Insurance is becoming a luxury.”

That’s what one community member told ARC Justice during research into access to affordable insurance across north-central Victoria.

Our report, Impossible Decisions, found that more people are being pushed into impossible choices between insurance, food, fuel and housing costs.

We’re seeing the impact of climate disasters long after floodwaters recede. People are still dealing with unsafe housing, debt and uncertainty years later.

⚖️ Regional women deserve safe legal support ⚖️

ARC Justice CEO Damian Stock met with Premier Jacinta Allan in Parliament House today to discuss the growing pressure on women navigating the family law system in regional Victoria.

Around 80% of family law matters involve family violence. Yet safe legal support and representation remain out of reach for many women and families.

Resolving disputes around children, safety and financial security shouldn’t depend on whether someone can afford private legal representation.

Regional communities need properly funded family law and family violence legal services so people can act on their rights safely and fairly.

Damian was in Melbourne today as part of the Federation of Community Legal Centres Victoria's campaign (https://www.fclc.org.au/gotyourback) launch calling for stronger investment in community legal services, with ARC Justice continuing to advocate for better support for women and families across regional Victoria.

🔹 We’ve got your back 🔹

Community legal centres help people through some of the hardest moments in their lives.

Family violence. Housing stress. Debt. Disaster recovery. Everyday legal problems that can quickly become crises without support.

ARC Justice CEO Damian Stock is at Parliament House in Melbourne today for the launch of the Federation of Community Legal Centres Victoria's new campaign calling for stronger investment in community legal services.

Right now, community legal centres across Victoria are turning away two people for every one person they can help. That’s not sustainable.

People deserve access to legal help before problems spiral out of control.

🧡 Housing security matters for victim-survivors 🧡

A new report from has found family violence victim-survivors remain one of the largest groups seeking support with rental issues.

Frontline workers reported ongoing barriers, including discrimination, difficulty finding housing and challenges accessing their rights as renters.

At ARC Justice, we know safe housing plays a critical role in safety, recovery and independence.

Alongside our direct legal support for victim-survivors, we continue to advocate for housing and tenancy systems that better recognise the realities of family violence and remove barriers to safe, stable housing.

🌧️ “As climate disasters become more frequent, renters can’t remain an afterthought.” 🌧️

That’s one of the key findings from ARC Justice’s new report – Where do we go now? Renters’ experiences of housing precarity and climate disaster.

The research examines what happened to renters after the 2022 floods across regional Victoria and highlights how housing insecurity shapes recovery long after the water recedes.

Some renters were displaced from their communities. Others stayed in damaged homes because they had nowhere else to go. Many were navigating repairs, mould, rising costs and uncertainty in a rental market already under pressure.

The report also highlights the critical role trusted local organisations played in supporting people through recovery.

🏠 “I feel like I’m stuck and there’s nothing I can do about it.” 🏠

That’s how one renter described life after the 2022 floods and it sits at the centre of a new ARC Justice research report – Where do we go now? Renters’ experiences of housing precarity and climate disaster – launched recently.

The report draws on interviews with renters and support services across north and central Victoria and shows how recovery actually works on the ground, particularly in regional areas where rental options are already limited.

For many renters, decisions about repairs, insurance and even whether they can stay in their home sit with someone else, leaving people with few real options when disaster hits.

🏠 Safe housing should be the standard 🏠

A new report from Victorian Council of Social Service has found mould remains one of the most common issues facing renters.

More than two-thirds of frontline workers supporting private renters had helped someone dealing with mould in the past year.

The report highlights the serious impacts poor housing conditions can have on people's health and wellbeing.

At ARC Justice, we regularly help renters dealing with repairs, maintenance issues and rental properties that fail to meet minimum standards.

We continue to advocate for stronger enforcement of rental laws and greater accountability across the housing system so renters are not left carrying the burden of unsafe housing.
