Renunciation of citizenship is reversible only in theory. The four questions worth sitting with before that step have nothing to do with money.
In our work with cross-border families, the principals who get renunciation right are the ones who treated it as a planning exercise rather than a transactional one. The questions they asked themselves were structural.
Will I need a visa to enter my country of birth, and is there a long-term residence status that preserves access? Will I incur exit taxes, and how will estate and gift treatment of my assets change once I am no longer a citizen? How will I continue to access bank accounts, regulated land holdings, and property that carry citizen-only rules? And how will the renunciation interact with my family’s status, particularly for children who derived their citizenship from mine?
The detail that catches most principals is not the tax line. It is the access question — to family, to property, to bank accounts that close without notice.
Renunciation is a doorway that does not always open in both directions.
