ℹ️ Africa’s digital legal architecture extends beyond individual national laws.
🌍 The Malabo Convention is the African Union’s continental framework addressing cybersecurity, cybercrime, electronic transactions and personal data protection. Adopted in 2014, it entered into force on 8 June 2023 after the required number of ratifications was reached.
💡 That does not mean every African country now operates under one uniform data-protection regime. National laws, ratification and domestic implementation still matter. But the Convention provides an important shared framework for how African states approach digital trust, data governance and cyber risk.
🔐 For businesses operating across African markets, digital compliance is therefore both national and regional. Understanding the laws in each jurisdiction remains essential, but so does understanding the wider legal architecture developing across the continent.
