CHIEF Justice Mumba Malila has encouraged lawyers country wide not to relent but to remain professional and ethical in executing their services to the public.

Dr Malila said legal practitioners have a mandate to remain steadfast to meet their commitment to integrity, professionalism and top notch client care.

He implored the legal community to contribute immensely to provision of justice and equality to all people, adding that the future of the vocation of advocacy in the country rests in their hands.

Dr Malila was speaking at the 30-year-anniversary of the establishment of Corpus Legal Practitioners in Lusaka on Friday evening.

FORMER Supreme Court Judge Phillip Musonda is opposed to taking cases involving Zambian residents and foreign investors to London courts because the country has a competent judiciary.

Last week, Leigh Day, a London-based law firm, announced that it was suing First Quantum Minerals (FQM) for allegedly displacing close to 6,000 villagers in North Western Province.

The affected communities claim that their suit against FQM should be heard in an English court as relevant policies implemented at the Zambian mines are devised in England.

But Judge Musonda said the case could be tried in the Zambian jurisdiction as opposed to taking it to London and has since asked Attorney-General Mulilo Kabesha to intervene.

“He cannot watch this assault on our judicial sovereignty and this is contrary to public policy,” the retired adjudicator said in his feature article.

Dr Musonda is not the first prominent figure to protest the planned hearing of the case abroad.

DID YOU KNOW THAT÷

It is unprofessional for counsel to become personally invested in a client's case. When counsel takes a personal interest, it can lead to offensive and overly aggressive behavior, which may irritate opposing counsel and hinder the possibility of reaching a compromise. It is essential to maintain professional independence at all times.
