Children may occasionally pass practical information between parents. Concern arises when this becomes an established pattern in which the child is expected to carry demands, accusations, grievances or adult interpretations of past events to the targeted parent.

The child may be told to ask why the parent “did this to us,” demand explanations about the separation, finances or court proceedings, repeat hostile remarks, or present a revised version of family history they do not have the knowledge or developmental capacity to evaluate. What appears to be an independently raised concern may contain adult language, conclusions and emotional meanings supplied by the coercively controlling parent.

Parent-child boundaries are gradually eroded. Instead of being free to relate to the targeted parent through affection, ordinary conversation and shared experience, the child’s contact becomes organised around confrontation, interrogation and the defence of one parent against the other.

This can involve triangulation, emotional parentification and role reversal. The child may begin to feel responsible for obtaining answers, enforcing the aligned parent’s position, correcting the targeted parent or delivering hostility that the adult has chosen not to communicate directly.

The child may also be expected to report back about what the targeted parent said, how they responded and whether they became upset, defensive or frustrated. They are no longer simply spending time with someone they love. They are monitoring the interaction while anticipating how each detail will later be received and interpreted.

The psychological burden can be considerable. The child may experience anxiety before contact, guilt afterwards and confusion about whether the words they are using, or the position they are defending, genuinely belong to them. They may fear disappointing the aligned parent if they do not deliver the message forcefully enough, while also feeling distress about the emotional harm caused to the targeted parent.

Over time, the child can become a conduit for adult conflict and proxy abuse without recognising how they have been recruited into it. Their relationship with the targeted parent is progressively displaced by an adult role they were never emotionally or developmentally equipped to carry.
