Was Cancelling the 2025 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Really Necessary?
On Sunday morning, 19 October 2025, thousands of runners stood ready to take on the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon — until organisers suddenly cancelled the event less than two hours before the start.

The reason? Dangerously high winds that caused serious damage along the route and at the start/finish venue.
The decision was made after emergency consultations with the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management, SAPS, and medical services — prioritising runner and spectator safety.

While many athletes were left disappointed (and out of pocket for travel and accommodation), Sanlam has since announced that all 2025 entrants will receive a sponsored entry for either the 2026 or 2027 marathon — a commendable gesture of goodwill.

From a legal point of view, the organisers acted within their rights. Their official terms clearly limit liability for cancellations caused by unforeseen safety risks, and under the Consumer Protection Act, their “no refund” policy is likely enforceable since the decision was made in good faith to protect lives.

But here’s the question many are asking…

Cape Town is known for its strong winds — could the organisers have prepared better for these conditions, or was cancelling the only responsible choice?
