Many people assume that once they move into a property, they automatically become the owner. In reality, the occupation date and transfer date are often two very different milestones in the property transfer process.
🏡 Occupation Date
This is the date the buyer is allowed to move into the property and take occupation.
📜 Transfer Date
This is the date the property is officially registered in the buyer's name at the Deeds Office. Only then does legal ownership transfer to the buyer.
In some cases, a buyer may move in weeks or even months before transfer takes place. During this period, occupational rent may be payable, depending on the terms of the sale agreement.
Understanding the difference can help avoid confusion and ensure you know exactly where you stand during the transfer process.
