Last night, out of nowhere, my 11-year-old son asked me a question about being married in community of property.💍
Apart from being surprised by his question, I was ridiculously excited about it. 😂
Not because I expected my 11-year-old to suddenly become fascinated by matrimonial property regimes, but because I realised that if this is one of the things my children can take from watching me build a career in law, understanding that they can ask questions, know their rights, think critically and make informed decisions about their lives, then I am happy.😁
I am thankful for these questions and these special conversations.🌿
And perhaps, years from now, they'll realise that my career wasn't just something I did. It was also something I shared with them.
Let’s normalise having these conversations with our children. The conversations about money, relationships, rights and responsibilities in a marriage.
As we say in Afrikaans, “Trou is nie perde koop nie.” 😂
If this is one of the things they learn from watching their mom build a career, I'll consider it a pretty great legacy. 💜⚖️
