Association of Self Sustainable Communities-Youth "To overcome the ills of our society , we will all have to contribute something to the change we wish

26/01/2015

A new year has dawned and a blank paged chapter has been offered for a story to be written on. It's time to take up that pen, predict the future and change the plot for a powerful climax.

As lectures are about to commence and as school life is about to take shape, the association would like to wish all of you luck with your academics and that you achieve those results you've been longing for. And to our alumni, we hope that you find success in the working world and become to our nation, people of worth, implementers of change and powerhouses.

This is also a fresh start for the association and this means we have the opportunity to do even better than we did in the past year. Let us take it upon ourselves to put in the extra work needed to ensure that our already existent projects and those that will be developed in the course of the year become successes and that they are the best of what we as a movement of change are capable of producing.

We predict a year of success not only in the association but in the lives of all those who make the association what it is.

To a great year!

The Association of Self-Sustainable Communities will be carrying out
its second project of the year i.e. The Mandela day project.

We will be carrying on with last year's Mandela day project by
installing a water tank at Tlhaloganyo Primary School in Hammanskraal
where we have already erected a vegetable garden.

We would appreciate it if you would avail yourself for this project so
that it could be a success.

The project will take place on Friday the 18th. Transport will leave
at 8:00 from the university. Please wait in front of the HSB/Library
and you will be collected from there to where the transport will be
waiting.

Many people on the whatsapp group have indicated that they will be going, you are therefore informed that space will be allocated on first come first serve basis.

Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious lifestyle, was neither happy nor content.

One day, the King came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked. This fascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Land, unhappy and gloomy, while a lowly servant had so much joy. The King asked the servant, "Why are you so happy?"

The man replied, "Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my family and I don't need too much - just a roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies."

The king was not satisfied with that reply. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the King's woes and the servant's story, the advisor said, "Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has not been made part of The 99 Club."

"The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?" the King inquired.
The advisor replied, "Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant's doorstep."
When the servant saw the bag, he took it into his house. When he opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy... So many gold coins!

He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. He wondered, "What could have happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins!"
He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted, he decided that he was going to have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection.

From that day, the servant's life was changed. He was overworked, horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make that 100th gold coin. He stopped singing while he worked.

Witnessing this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his advisor's help, the advisor said, "Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club."

He continued, "The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough to be happy but are never content, because they're always yearning and striving for that extra 1 telling to themselves: "Let me get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life."

We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we're given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a price for our growing needs and desires. That's what joining The 99 Club is all about.

This year ASC saw the launch of “Adopting the Future”, a campaign initiated to aid high school learners with applying for university and getting funding. The project took off during the university`s Open Day on the 24th of May 2014, where we took the kids on a tour of the university, helped them fill in their application forms, and with the help of House Humanities, helped pay for their application.

What is “Adopting the Future”?

Adopting the future is a project aimed at eradicating poverty by insuring that promising high school learners in underprivileged communities find placement in university and funding to further their studies. The project was first thought out and examined by the organization after realizing that the number of learners who do not make it into varsity is slowly increasing, due to a lack of assistance with regards to applying and getting funding. This is an issue mostly experienced by underdeveloped communities, whose high school learners show much promise and dedication to their studies.

As an organization which is based in varsity, we have noticed that many people who come to university open days, come not having a clue as to what it is that they want to study. "Adopting the Future`s" objective is not only to make certain that high school learners have enough information about applying for varsity and funding, but also to give or take the adopted learners to career exhibitions so as to allow them the opportunity to explore different career fields.
