LC Truth Verification LC Truth Verification uses Forensic Voice Stress analysis to detect deception from a person

Who is LC Truth Verification:
LC Truth Verification was started by Heinrich van Heerden in 2015. Heinrich has been involved in many facets of the security industry for the past 13 years. Working for some of the biggest security companies in South Africa as part of their operations teams where he conducted investigations, interrogations, managerial tasks and special task teams.

What is Voice Stress Analysis?

Voice Stress Analysis (VSA) is a procedure used for detection of deception (lie detection) or truth verification or to determine psychological stress profiles. The technology has been used for over 40 years. BAKER-DVSA© software has dramatically improved on that outdated technology. Over 15,000 various VSA systems are in use worldwide. More than 2500 U.S. law enforcement agencies use VSA. The U.S. Department of Defense uses VSA in its fight against worldwide terrorism.

In the fall of 2000, Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL), Rome, NY and the National Institute Of Justice’s National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center released its findings on voice stress analysis (VSA) technology. Those results confirm the accuracy of VSA technology. An edited copy of the AFRL news release follows:

ROME, N.Y., ( AFPN) –

A three-year study by Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate engineers here has concluded several features of voice stress analysis are effective for detecting when a person is answering questions under stress. “The Department of Defense Polygraph Institute (DoDPI) provided us with tapes of investigations from two murder cases where the suspects eventually confessed and were found guilty,” “Using voice stress analyzers … (the) machines were accurate on 45 out of 45 instances.” Ed. Note: That is 100% accuracy.

Dr. Baker provided VSA training to the Rome Lab analysts and engineers for the above study, provided polygraph and DVSA training, and participated in Phase II with the DVSA. BAKER unique and proprietary stress pattern quantification and chart analysis techniques were utilized in the AFRL study – thus validating those techniques.

Earlier studies conducted by both government and private organizations show similar VSA validity and reliability.

Since its inception in the early 1970’s, Voice Stress Analysis detection-of-deception technique is now utilized throughout the world by law enforcement investigators, arson investigators, military intelligence & counterintelligence units, psychologists, psychiatrists, insurers, and government agencies. VSA technology is effectively utilized worldwide in locations such as the European Communities, South Africa, Central and South America, Middle East, Asia, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the Balkans. Now, through DVSA software, the science is easier to use and more effective than ever before – at an affordable price. Private Law Enforcement Grants available.

TWELVE PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS DEMONSTRATED BY FVAS

(These are “physiological functions” not stress indicators.)

The FVAS System’s capabilities far exceed those of mechanical, electronic, and computerized polygraph systems. For purposes of detection of deception the Baker - DVSA measures and graphically displays twelve physiological functions as compared to three with the polygraph. (Outdated VSA systems only utilize measurements of one function – MICRO-MUSCLE TREMOR.)
Functions measured, instantly displayed by the FVAS and analyzed by the examiner are:

1. Single or multiple respiratory utterances.
2. Rate of glottis opening and closure.
3. Duration of utterance
4. Display of MMT (Fifth voice formant)
5. Absence or presence of “pulse as related to blood pressure”. (Internal carotid artery)
6. Pitch changes
7. General nervous tension

When all graphs show noticeable stress in the Relevant / Irrelevant test.

8. Measures third voice formant wave shape
This is displayed in the derived stress pattern without taking the presence or absence of MMT into account.
9. Demonstrates unique & individual patterns in speech and diction. (Voice ID purposes)

Each set of charts from the same person have some type of commonality among them.
This is not considered voice spectrograph but can show similar vocal activity of the same utterances from the same person.
To use FVAS for “voice comparison” all above factors must be taken in to account. True voice comparison should be conducted with Voice Spectrograph software.

10. Ticks & Tocks (mechanical)
11. Amplitude of utterance. (Loudness)(Vertical)
12. Time duration between end of stimuli and beginning of answer “The Antagonistic Response Altheometer (TARA)

WHAT IS VOICE STRESS ANALYSIS?

We get this question quite a lot as most people are familiar with Polygraph test due to its exposure on the television and very few programs feature VSA test as it is a relatively new technology and not as visual as Polygraph.
For this purpose the producers of programs and movies make use of old analog polygraph machines (needles & ink systems) for their display purposes.

Basically the VSA test comprises the measurement of the flexibility of the vocal cords. As one start to stress and enter into the “fight, flight or freeze (FOF)” mode, the body undergoes several changes to cope with the danger at hand. One of these changes is the body reduce blood to the extremities and utilize it in the major muscle groups located mainly in the upper body. This causes the muscles in the throat to tighten and the basic frequency of the voice changes.

In the late 40’s Dr. Olof Lippold from the University College in London discovered all humans had a base frequency of between 8 to 12 hertz when in a normal state.

As he put it in his report named PHYSIOLOGICAL TREMOR, “A slight oscillation at approximately 10 cycles per second accompanies the normal contraction of voluntary muscles. It appears to be caused by a “hunting” mechanism in the reflex that controls the muscle”

Once we enter into the FOF syndrome, this basic frequency is diminished and is significantly less.
You can read more about VSA or DVSA (Digital Voice Stress Analysis) at Dr. Gary Baker’s website.

DVSA© is the only VSA that provides optional VAST (Voice Analysis Scoring Tool™ and Scoring Method™) which confirms examiners’ conclusions.
