Planned national shutdown 20 March 2023

The EFF has called for a national shutdown across South Africa on the 20th of March 2023.

SAFTU and their 24 trade union affiliates which span across numerous sectors will be joining the protest. The protest has been approved by NEDLAC making it a protected protest.

They plan to shut down road networks, and the flow of services and goods. Taxi association has also expressed their support, which will mean the largest part of South African public transport will be shutdown on the 20th of March 2023.

It is recommended that employers do not take disciplinary action against employees who fail to attend work on 20 March as a result of the protest action, notwithstanding the provisions of the individual employment contract.

The principle of “no work, no pay” will apply.

New minimum wage

The Minister of Employment and Labour has gazetted a new National Minimum Wage, effective 1 March 2023.

The new minimum wage has increased to R25,42 per hour and is applicable to all employees who fall under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, as well as domestic and farm workers.

The ruling comes after Jane Bwanya, the fiancée and life partner of the late flamboyant 57-year-old Capetonian and multimillionaire Anthony Ruch, approached the court in February to have an earlier order from the Western Cape High Court upheld.
